I am going to tell you all about the English expression "more than you bargained for"!

Hmm, I wonder if you've heard someone use this before?

Oh, and caution. This is wrong: "more than WHAT you bargained for" -- remove the 'what'.

We are going to break the expression down on its literal meaning, tell you the real meaning, and how you can use it in your daily conversations.

I am also going to tell you about sea snakes!

Yes, the charming but venomous slithering snakes living in the ocean.

And find out what happened to some guy who just went to the loo but ended up in the hospital.

Enjoy!

This video was extremely entertaining and enjoyable Pete! So many slangs and expressions to learn! I'll write them in this comment for anyone wanting to learn them after! Interesting that deaths caused from a snake's venom are extremely rare, first one in 1935 and second one in 2019, still, be aware of those! Your content is amazing and I have so much to learn!

Slangs/Expressions:
1. Wear someone out - Cause someone to become tired.
2. Bite off more than you can chew - Take on a commitment one cannot fulfil; attept something you can't do.
3. Grub - Food.
4. Every man and his dog - Everyone.
5. In the sticks - In the bush or somewhere with lots of trees.
6. A four-wheel-drive - A vehicle with four-wheel drive transmission system, typically designed for off-road driving.
7. Set up shop - Get established; set things up.
8. A stubby - A short and stout bottle of beer.
9. Pissing down - Raining heavily.
10. Smooth sailing - Very easy.
11. Bare live young - Give birth to offspring as opposed to laying eggs.
12. Give something a wide berth - Avoid or stay away from something.
13. More than you bargained for - More than you wanted / An unexpected outcome, especially an unfavourable one.

I hope that helped, I'll also read my comment a couple of times to remember them and progress further, stay safe and have a ripper of a spring and week ahead! Many cheers mate!!!

This video is one of the best Australian English teaching video I've ever seen. You gave so many examples for me to know how to use it and repeated many times enough for me to remember the pronunciation. And the slangs in the video are something I would like to learn as well. Thank you Pete!

Great episode Pete 👍 apart from the idiom I like the way you used the slangs (in the stick, set up shop….) to demonstrate how to use it in daily communication. Thanks heaps 🙏🏼😊

I marvel at how Aussies can survive there. If you're not killed by a shark in the water, a box jellyfish, a rockfish or a sea snake may get you. On land you have dingos stealing babies, poisonous snakes galore, redback spiders, crocodiles and ...humans.
I tip my hat to you all.
Fun stuff, Pete. Noah's a darling.

More than you bargained for = o tiro saiu pela culatra. Entendo o conceito mas não temos em pt. uma frase que exprima exatamente o sentido, mesmo porque se você "barganhou" e conseguiu "mais" então isso deveria ser uma coisa positiva? Esse ditado realmente não faz sentido!
