Scratch accidentally ran into the ogre trio in blighted village, finding treasure, while I was making my way to decimate the goblin camp, and he managed to convince them to work for me for free, which is a DC 20 CHA check.

I never realised there was a puzzle for the crest until way after I got the mace. I just lockpicked the door where the crest was hidden behind.
