Former Scotland minister brands SNP ‘disgrace’ over independence spending as teachers strike

A former Scotland minister has branded it a “disgrace” that SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon intends to continue spending public money to push for independence, after the Supreme Court ended her referendum dream.
Supreme Court judges unanimously ruled this week that the Scottish Government cannot run a referendum without the consent of Westminster, because matters of the constitution are reserved, not devolved.
However, reports emerged that the Scottish Government is set to continue using taxpayers’ money to “make the case for independence and for the Scottish people to have their say”.
Lord Foulkes of Cumnock, who served as a Scotland minister under Sir Tony Blair, branded this a “disgrace”.
He said during a debate in the House of Lords: “The First Minister of Scotland has said that although there’s not going to be a referendum, that’s now clear, she’s going to continue to spend money, taxpayers’ money, British taxpayers’ money, on civil service and other preparations for this non-existent referendum.
“Is this not a disgrace, particularly today, when teachers in Scotland are on strike because they’re not getting enough of a pay increase?”
Current Scotland minister, Lord Offord of Garvel, said what the Scottish Government spend money on is a matter for them.
