Europe's economic future is at stake. It has fallen far behind the US on multiple metrics and is not productive or innovative enough to close the gap. Now the return of Donald Trump to the White House has raised more existential questions. Can the EU do what is needed to secure a prosperous, democratic future for its citizens? In this episode of Business Beyond, we put the key questions to Eurogroup President Paschal Donohoe, former Italian prime minister Enrico Letta and Martin Wolf, the Financial Times chief economic commentator for almost 30 years.

We in Europe need to step up and not wait always for the USA to say how high we need to jump. The USA, post war and during Cold War, was convinient to keep Europeans under check. Now the USA says we need to wake up [rightly so], then the USA cannot moan the Europe is not following also everything USA says. So let's wake up as europeans. Proud european here! Let's do this!

If the EU fails, then the EU was responsible for that failure. EU is responsible for their future.

EU needs to get rid of its Burocracy and speed up digitalization. Everything involving government takes forever. It is much easier to set up business outside Europe

Time for Europe to do what's good for Europe and not just what America says is good for Europe. We've been a puppy for too long allowing them to call the shots.

Globalization is dying of cancer. We have to become self reliant in almost all strategic sectors

Europe always thought it's on the table with U$.
😆But in reality, it's on the menu.

NGL, the EU should decouple dependency on ANY other major power.
We NEED our own sovereignty, we NEED to be more united with each other, we NEED a common defense policy and military (we're not enemies, a unified defence force would be more effective and efficient, reducing cost while increasing power), and above all we NEED technological sovereignty and even leadership in key industries: we need our own effective aerospace technology, quantum computing, semiconductor technology, AI and robotics.
As for leadership we absolutely MUST become the global leaders in next gen medical technology, specifically regenerative medicine, bionics, gene therapy and stem cell treatments. If we don't we will be granting dependency of our healthcare systems to entities abroad that will cause them to crash, especially if an outside fore has access to serious breakthrougs like anti-aging cures, disabillity solutions or cures for autoimmune diseases.

Also part of the reason US Companies are valued more than the EU companies is to do with tax free investments in the USA like the 401k
And other tax efficient investment methods.
This needs to change in EU countries.
Especially due to the insane property prices in some EU countries like Ireland .

Europeans, start with getting a spine and tell US to leave all military bases in Europe.
Or just live the lives of vassals and get treated like ones.

I don't think so, but as an American I hope so. The world needs a prosperous Democratic Europe. Unfortunately, decades of bad policy is coming to home to roost.

So, to get better, EU needs to get into debt? That sounds like what's been happening in the US, and now we're up to our eyebrows in debt and a collapsing dollar.... these economists are not trying to help EU.

With the current popularity of national leaders advocating populist and sovereigntist policies, combined with the United States' interest in weakening Europe, it is hard to remain optimistic about the continent's future.

I love how everyone in Europe is talking about Trump annexing Greenland but are basically silent on Canada. I'm pretty convinced if he tries to actually do it, you will all do nothing, even though EVERY SINGLE TIME the call to protect Europe or it's possession rang out, we stepped up. My grandma's brother died fighting in the Netherlands, her other brother fought in the Battle of Britain. If it comes time to return the favour, will you step up?

First of all, huge fan of DW, but on this video specifically the song in the audio is unnecessary, I'd rather hear the content of the video clearly and without the dramatic background
