The analog stage following the DAC chip is completely different in the S version. It is not just enabling a few new features. The complete board layout is utterly different too. The non S has big capacitors directly in the analog audio signal path, the S is direct coupled, no caps in the signal path.

Big difference is this uses 2 x 4497, instead of a single 4499 chip you would need them side by side to hear the difference.
