What is Mercedes DAS?

The DAS system worked by allowing the driver, in addition to the rotational movement of the steering wheel, to move the steering wheel closer to or farther from themselves. In this way, they could adjust the toe angle whenever they wanted—opening up a whole new dimension.

The fact these guys do active micro adjustments to the car setup mid race, and literally mid corner is crazy sick and insane skill.

"You don't have to re-invent the wheel."
Mercedes: *And I took that personally.*

You know you're a brilliant race engineer when the FIA bans your innovation.

The DAS system could make F1 more safe and entertaining to watch! Since it helps with some of the problems F1 have; too much speed is too dangerous, too much safety is too boring.
And it's controlled by the driver, so different drivers will be using it in their own way. I'm all in for this kind of technology as long as the driver is the one controlling it. No automatic or radio controls.

Everytime something innovative happens, FIA bans it 🤦‍♂️

Really strange that other teams complained about this invention.
Isn’t this motorsport all about these inventions?

Ferrari must have been pissed they didn't think of this first

The fact the racers had the knowledge and awareness to adjust the toe angle to each corner is an amazing feat in itself

Mercedes had issues heating their tyres in 2019, DAS was used to eliminate that issue

The athletic ability to adjust the wheel while in the middle of tight corners at these speeds, is impressive

Imagine a competition about innovation constantly banning the most innovative things done in said competition, that would be very dumb wouldn't it.

Honestly its such an honor to make a design/system/feature that is technically legal but then be made illegal. Its such a flex as an engineer.

Innovation is what f1 has always been about but now they just ban it, one of many reasons f1 is 💩 now

This should apply to all team. It make the race more like a race. Not ban it

it would be much more interesting if they did not ban this system, but allowed it for others

That's when u know ur genuinely a genius engineer...

I want to see an open racing category, bring your best and fastest car, and win, no regulations.

The skill it would take to be good with that is so impressive. That’s insane

“Why does no one ever innovate in f1?”
FIA every time someone innovates: “that’s gives an unfair advantage, BANNED”

I wonder if the wheel actually pushed outward and was up to the driver to keep it held down to keep the toe angle where the driver wants it, because you would naturally hold it down a little more when hard turning and then when you are on a straight your arms could relax and allow the driver to adjust resistance by feel. I bet the road feedback through the wheel would be very interesting on something like that.

Disclaimer I dont know anything about f1, just guessing at this stuff
