First vs. Ground floor

In Brazil it is the same as in the UK. We call the ground floor "térreo" and subsequently first, second and so on. I didn't know there was this difference between US and UK 😊

Hi Antonio!

In Mexico we call the PLANTA BAJA (PB in the elevators), to the level that is above the ground and immediately above it, there may or may not be a mezzanine.
Then upwards, they are numbered: 1, 2, 3, etc.
Down they are numbered in reverse: 1, the one immediately below the ground floor, PB. 2, the one below it, and so on, as is the case with underground parking lots.

USA I was always look at the buttons and while waiting I look for indications because I have experienced both. Especially in hospitals and medical facilities.

Here in Brazil we have the same considerations as in England concerning the name of the floors. Actually, Brazil and England follow the same pattern of measurements (length and weight).

In Egypt we mostly use the American version but if there is any confusion we just say the first or second balcony. To refer to the floors above the ground floor.

In Bulgaria we have the both plus traditional and Renaissance architecture-so it is much more confusing. I think this depends on the architecture school of the main architect and the type of the style.😂

In Colombia we name floors in the same way they do it in the US, but here in Barcelona (Spain) they have several floors before the first. It might be bajo, entresuelo, principal and then first floor and so on.

Anthony: In Argentina, 🇦🇷 it is similar to British English, the ground floor = Planta Baja ( PB ), the first floor ( primer piso ), the second floor ( segundo piso ).

In Australia we speak British English, but I would call the ground level the first floor 😅 my husband said he would call the ground and first floor the same thing. I wonder what others do.

In the hotel where I used to work there was a notice reading :" reception one floor up" for that exact reason

In Europe a lot of countries also have a name for the floor in between the ground floor and the basement: the sous terrain
