Blondie: Call Me

Music History: "Call Me" is a song by the American rock band Blondie and the theme to the 1980 film "American Gigolo." Here’s a brief history of how this iconic track came to be:

"Call Me" was a collaboration between Blondie's lead singer, Debbie Harry, and Italian disco producer Giorgio Moroder. Moroder initially approached Stevie Nicks from Fleetwood Mac to help compose and perform the song for the soundtrack of "American Gigolo," but contractual issues prevented her participation. Instead, Moroder turned to Debbie Harry, who wrote the lyrics in a few hours while riding in a cab.

The song features a mix of rock, disco, and new wave elements, fitting well with Blondie's eclectic style. The lyrics depict a theme of empowerment and mysterious allure, which aligns with the film's plot focusing on a male escort navigating the upper society.

Released in early 1980, "Call Me" became a commercial success. It topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart for six consecutive weeks and became Billboard's No. 1 song of 1980. The track also reached the top of the charts in the UK and Canada, among other countries.

I had a surreal experience on NY Eve 1978, met Debbie right after the NY eve concert in Oakland CA. She kissed me on the cheek and wished me Happy New Year.

Heart of Glass, Call was an Absolute novelty back in the late 70s and was a precursor of the New Wave Rock music subgenre, inspiring future stars such Madonna...Still love Debbie Harry❤

Met her on the broad water, gold coast Queensland Australia late 1980's.
Bungy jumping of all places.
Debbie was wearing a Ramones Tee shirt and asked me to swap for my Iggy pop "Raw F**ing Power" road crew tee shirt.
Genuinely engaging and nice to speak with.

A bunch of years ago I met Debbie at an art thing in NY and I guess no one recognized her, we chatted and laughed at a few things and I really remember her smile , It was pretty and natural ...kinda bad girl-ish
