While there are no 'Cover Mechanics' in GTA3 or VC, you can theoretically take cover behind walls and cars.

With taking cover, I think the reason R* made it so only Niko could do cool cover animations is because of his backstory. He was in the military so he most likely learnt how to take proper cover and how to do so. In GTA 5 the characters there are most likely thought out as they just want to get to cover no need for cool, fancy shit. Then again that's just a theory and I could be 100% wrong, but it makes sense!

I remember GTA Vice City's crouching mechanic and finding it useful as a kid, San Andreas' mobility while crouched behind cover was awesome, GTA 4 suck me into the action and made my firefights feel dangerous, and GTA 5's made me feel like a fun action movie... all different flavors of cover over the years

A couple of things to point out about GTA V's cover logic:
1. Your character can perform a unique cover swap animation if two bits of cover are parallel to each other and are slightly far between each other (e.g. doorways, boxes, parked cars.) To do this: you must take cover, then move your character in the direction of the cover you want to move to, then while still holding in the same direction (I think when your character starts doing the peaking animation), press the take cover button again.
2. You can even fire off your gun while cover swapping by shooting your gun while the animation is playing
3. Peaking is not entirely useless in GTA V, you can use it to take more time in accurately aiming your reticle at enemies without having to expose yourself unnecessarily, especially if they're constantly ducking in and out of cover (got this one from one of DarkViperAu's Facts and Glitches eps.)

Fun fact: cover blindfire in the pc version of GTA 4 (mouse specifically) is op. It has the same precision when you're peeking or aiming with right click so that makes the game easier.
Of course in console or plugging a controller on pc will make the blindfire less accurate as intended to be.

The more I watch your videos the more I realize just how much better GTA 4 is compared to GTA 5 in pretty much anything. I love the different cover animations in GTA 4. I just them often.

I was ALWAYS disappointed that the slide-and-roll animations got cut from 4 to 5. It was so super neat and fun to pull off to me. The first thing I noticed was when the first firefight broke out at the beginning of GTA 5. Hopefully, 6 can have more dynamic cover mechanics. Check out the ( very sadly ) canceled Eight Days for PS3 and its cover/ traversal mechanics. It'd be super dope if GTA 6 had that to always have firefights that feel flashy and spiced up. Or even each character has a specific animation tailored just for them!

In GTA 4, it is technically possible to peek out of cover. You just have to hold the aim button to do so, but Niko/Johnny/Luis won’t stick their head out as much as Michael/Franklin/Trevor.
