Fareed Zakaria, host of the renowned CNN program “Fareed Zakaria GPS,” talks about how to maintain peace in the post-Cold War era. He examines what he calls the geopolitical revolution that's taking place today and compares it with the unusual state of peace that existed from 1989 until the invasion of Ukraine in 2022 - a time without constant and sustained geopolitical rivalry and tension. He looks at current state of conflict and tension, especially with China. He is joined by Stephen Hadley, former National Security Advisor. This talk is part of the the 2024 Susan Shirk Lecture on U.S.-China Relations at UC San Diego's School of Global Policy and Strategy. In its sixth year, the forum on U.S.-China Relations is the only American leadership meeting focused exclusively on China and U.S.-China relations. This year’s theme is “Widening the Aperture: U.S.-China Relations in the Global Context.” Recorded on 08/07/2024. [Show ID: 40146] #fareedzakaria #geopolitics #uschina #peace

This entire speech frames China as a challenge. Perhaps they should see beyond their hubris and ideology (or discrimination) and see China as an opportunity. Why seek a fight simply because you “may” lose your top dog status?

Has China asked other countries to choose sides? No. It's the US that did that.

Responsible state holder? You need a mirror to start with, who dropped the Atomic Bomb in Japan? Who went to war in Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Palestine and Ukraine got American blood and fingerprint all over.

The Chinese did not say the opposite! The Chinese did not ask the world to choose sides. You are very wrong !

Today, in PPP terms, the Chinese economy is 1.25 times larger than that of America. China was the largest economy in the world until 1820. America is the Joney come lately.
A recent PEW (American) survey showed that 88 % of Chinese are happy with their political system and see a better future for their children, whereas only 28 % of Americans felt the same way. Today, the Chinese are enjoying the best period in their 4000-year history.

The speaker knows so little about china. He should have talked about India, which he may know better.

Mr Zakaria can always find lots of talking points to support US government regardless what US does.

Why is it only winning or losing instead of collaboration. Thucydides trap is a Western concept which doesn't work on the Chinese whose history is even longer.

I don’t think Zakaria has the up to date information on China! He is off the mark on some of his comments! I wonder whether he has visited China recently?

One has to realize that China has invest heavily in Latin America, Africa, Middle East, Asia, and don't forget about Eurasia! There's over 151 countries are members of the Chinese Belt and Road Initiative! Chinese government has the vision and long term goal knowing someday US will becoming an insignificant country in terms of trade since US really does not make anything! Chinese investment in developing countries will raise those countries' standard of living and thus will trade more with China! China graduates ten times more engineers than the US, nine out of ten PhD in the US university are foreigner students!

Seriously? Zakaria didn't know that China has a pension system for the vast majority of its citizens? He doesn't know about their affordable healthcare? He knows so little about China, he really has no business discussing it.

Inside of this speech, there is no right or wrong, no justice or injustice. It is shame to have such educational event to college students. We need to spread more about humanity, peace, love, prosperous for all in the world.

Zaharia is not telling the truth. But he only unintentionally exposed that other countries can not develop themself for a better life. Or else the country is at fault to disturb the would peace. It is only one country has the right to be better off, which is the USA. Otherwise you are not a responsible stakeholder. You are bad.

to understand any country is to have some appreciation of it's recent history and china is no exception. the speaker in this video gives zero context in which china had to deal with western imperialism over the last 200 years or it's role in global trade of the last 2500 years. this speaker mentions jeffrey sachs. if you want a broad and more contextualize understanding of today's china, sachs, will give you that

It is up to US to accommodate China's rise peacefully, there is no permanent hegemony or exceptionalism.

He talks a lot about history but forgot the most important history lesson. All empires, no matter how powerful they are, will always fall or decline. No country can stay number forever. it's impossible and goes against the natural order of things.
