Michael Dunn always gave a great performance. He use to get totally into his character, whoever he was playing.
He was great in "The wild, wild West" and his performances he gave in that show are legendary.
Same goes for the episode of "Star Trek."

This movie is one of the best ever made. It is about human nature, the good, the bad, and the ugly. It really touches the heart. Such great actors in it. Thanks for sharing this movie clip.

The little man in this scene with Lee Marvin & narrates the film Ship of Fools is the late, and wonderful Michael Dunn who was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award in this role. He was also in The Wild, Wild West series as recurring villain Dr. Miguelito Loveless (who's servant was the 7-foot plus Richard Kiel) in many episodes with Robert Conrad. Dunn also saved the life of an actress (Phoebe Dorin) on the set who nearly drowned.

Earlier in the film the migrant leader in steerage with the booming voice -- the fat man (that's his credit in the film) was Henry Calvin. Baby-boomers will remember him as the bumbling Sgt. Garcia in Disney's series Zorro in the 50s -- with Guy Williams.

Not being able to hit a curve ball on the outside corner sounds like the story of my life. I luv this scene.

That movie doesn't have any more plot than the book did. It is a bunch of character portrayals woven together amongst people confined to a ship heading straight for the Holacaust and all the horror that accompanied it. The scene directly before this one was a tender love scene between Simone Signoret and Oscar Werner that was no less captivating than the Curve Ball on the Outside Corner scene. The film can and does make those kinds of instantaneous shifts, but it needs them. I could barely breathe after the first scene, I released that tension with almost uncontrollable laughter in this one. If you're a modern kid who wants a lot of action, then this movie won't appeal. But I think there are still people in the world interested in people. I'm a major baseball fan, have a grandson who played professional baseball, and I'm always looking for baseball relief in pictures. This was a major find. Thanks Lee Marvin, and Abby Mann for writing it.

A few years ago, my brother-in-law and I had this discussion,
bordering on an argument, about what a curveball is.
He said it breaks down
and I said down and away.

After I saw this movie on TCM
I had to buy a copy just so I could show him this scene.
I think it’s one of the best movie scenes ever.

I could say the Grateful Dead brought me here,
but it was TCM.
Although, if I hadn’t heard the song (“Ship of Fools”)
I might not have watched the movie.
It is a movie worth seeing.

Concerning the curveball:
I think what was a curveball back then
Is now called a slider. ?
And maybe what was once a “sinker” is maybe now a “curve”. ?
Then there is the “slurve”. ?

By the time you get old they have started repealing your knowledge.

Imagine being BORN with a nose like that. Our whole family have been going to the best plastic surgeons in the world, for a solid century. And NONE of us have emerged from our rhinoplasties with noses so wonderful as Lee Marvin's.

I could take that pitch opposite field. Now a fastball inside? I am dead in the water.

We all have our demons.

If Lee had not signed on to do this role, that whole colossal Michelle madness that lasted 15 years likely would not have happened.

Unfortunately, his best scene was effortlessly stolen by Dunn.
