This was one of the first things I was advised to do years ago. And it worked great. But I was always a little annoyed that they were not "factory white". So I tried every prescribed method under the sun and even came up with plenty of my own. We're talking every thing from a potato on the end of a power drill to a dryer sheet on a sanding block and some really bizarre chemical concoctions in between...Using an eraser is still the best method I've tried after all these years.

That said not all erasers are made equal. So try a variety of erasers to find the one that gives you the best results. I can tell you that vinyl and plastic erasers don't work well (if at all). And the one that I've found to work the best so far is the Paper mate Pink Pearl.

Skip to 1:45 or play on 2x speed. Too much talking But GREAT advice.

as a former cook I've used plenty of sharpening steels I've never used a ceramic one after watching this video I am definitely going to get one . I have been collecting knifes for a few years now and these vids are great .

I have been using Soap & Water with an abrasive sponge but I will purchase an eraser and try this method. After viewing so many sharpening methods here on YouTube I have settled on using a Ceramic sharping rod for all my kitchen knives. I cook every day and I keep all my knives sharp enough for my every day needs. IMO, I don't think a Razor Sharp Knife is needed to cut my food! I am able to easily Cut or Chop my meat & Vegetables with My Knives! Yes, I have spent money on several sharpening devices and used different methods but like I said, I now only use the Ceramic Rod or a steel rod to keep all my knives sharp enough for my needs!

i was lucky enuf to realize, about 40 years ago that ceramics in angled blocks are the most efficient way to maintain an edge. HUGE difference when the carbon is removed. Get round rods, so you can rotate them several times before they need cleaning.

Good advice. Twenty seconds worth of info in a 3 minute video.

That's so much better than the other ideas I saw, involving scouring cleanser and abrasive sponge, etc.

Excellent Mike, I learned two things, how to clean years of accumulation from the angled crockstick sharpener in my kitchen, AND, Ikea sells exactly the butcher-style ceramic rod sharpener I have wanted for a long time. MANY THANKS!

I use a green nylon scratch pad used for cleaning non-stick pans and a little dish soap and hot water.
