I decided to get myself a 5TB Seagate Backup Plus USB hard disk. Since I already have the 2TB version, that got me to thinking... which is faster?

All Seagate laptop drives are cmr now. It's very slow as it fills up

Great video man. I have a Seagate Backup Plus 5TB for a couple years, MBpro + usb dongle as well, but my peak read/write speed is around 50mb/s. I don't know why it's so slow... Ran disk utility but no errors found. Formatted as APFS. Does anyone know how to fix this?

I returned my purchase of this 5TB hd because it was defective. then when they sent me another back the same thing happened. It's super slow when loaded with software. I loaded it about 1TB and it died.

just check the internal disk and see the rpm speed and cache, you'll know already.

Love seagate, but in today’s world, mechanical is only good for storage. If you are actively gaming and/or video editing, ssd is the best and the faster the better. Don’t cheap out with ssd or you’re going to be using it for storage only like a mechanical drive.

5TB HDD is SMR, thus if your old 2TB is CMR should be better overall.

Seagate Externals are crap when they get loaded up with data. Slow downs, drive crash. People all around the world have been talking about these "defective" drives. Don't buy them. Save yourself the trouble.
