I'm pretty picky with old bands carrying on, and I was a huge fan of the pixies circa 1991. The stuff they've been putting out in recent years hasn't really hit me even though I don't hate it.
Today I listened to this album three times in a row. Doesn't matter that they aren't instant classics and that it's fairly shallow and just kind of fun trippy spooky, fact is is that I listen to it three times in a row and enjoyed it. I'm going to give it a decent 7. For now. That might change for better or worse!

I’m amazed at the poor reception of this record - I think it’s their best album since their return. Pretty old school song writing but great nonetheless. Poor Pixies.

Sounds like he skipped through the album in a hurry. You don't do that with Pixies. That's why they fly under the radar. First song is 1-dimensional? It's literally two songs sandwiching a blistering solo. And the album is loaded with earworms

I can listen to any Pixies album and like it but they have settled into a predictable formula and a tone with their songs that makes repeated listens of the post-hiatus work more like an act of wishful thinking that there is more than you hear initially.

I listened to this today. I wasn't underwhelmed but wasn't overwhelmed either. I was just whelmed.
