Review - Fujifilm 16mm f1.4 and f2.8 Lenses - Which one would I recommend?

The Fujifilm 16mm f2.8 lens has quickly become one of my favourite lenses. I also have the 16mm f1.4 and in this video, I give my opinions on both lenses and contrast the different uses that I have for them.

I had the 16 2.8 twice and settled on the 16 1.4. Having the macro like performance and sharpness of the 16 1.4 was incredibly useful to me. It's not that big or that heavy as some people claim it to be but then again, I came from full frame DSLR with huge lenses and this is tiny compared to that. It's all about perspective. But I also loved how compact and small the 16 2.8 was, it's a great little lens and the auto focus is quite nice, a little better than the 1.4 but I wouldn't say it's heaps and bounds better. They are definitely two different lenses and worthy of owning both like you said.

Thanks, nice simple explanation. Like you, when finances permit, I will probably get both.
The 2.8 makes more practical sense, certainly if travel is involved.
Frankly, the only reason I would acquire the 1.4 is due to the concept of ""pride of ownership"""- a concept perfected by most Leica owners who will never extract a fraction of what the superlative Solm glass, not so much the cameras, are capable of.
The 16 1.4 appears to be regarded as the best of Fuji's excellent prime range. I see fairly priced second-hand units come up for sale from time to time, and when I have enough funds, may purchase one for the sole reason that I would like to own the best- whatever that term really means in this context- of the Fuji prime range.

My father uses the 14mm 2.8 and that appeared to be a really good lens too. I only use the X100 from Fuji, but still the video is interesting. A.,

Nice review. Minimum focussing distance is not typically highlighted in wide angle lense reviews.

Maybe compare the focus systems—big differences.

I had the 23mm and 16mm f1.4.. Borh nice, but what does anyone need them for? After I got the small brothers of both I had to ask whether there was a niche for the faster ones. There wasn’t. Why does anyone need burry backgrounds in wide angle? With the 16mm focal length...I used it very seldom and because of the weight and size of the f1.4 I used it never.

Like camera, the best lens is the one you have with you. I have a T4 so with IBIS why do I need a fast lens? The IQ of the smaller versions is right up there with the fast, heavy and huge fast versions; and they are 3 or 4 times the price.

I’ve been shooting for a lot of years. I grew up in photography thinking faster and more expensive was more professional. That’s no longer the case. On my H1 (that I sold to get the T4) they fit great, but since there was almost no practical use for Bokeh at those focal lengths and no need for speed, they went to KEH and I’ve never looked back.

When I have a bokeh jones I grab my 56mm f1.2 or even my surprisingly quiet 35mm f1.4 (must have just gotten a good one.) The rest of the time it’s all about the image and ultimately the weight and size. Don’t think that dropping $1000 on a lens is going to give you better results when the advantages are not something you’ll need at those focal lengths. The 16mm f2.8 you can stick in your pocket for the few times you man need it.

The equation has changed.

thanks for the video. i also have the 16mm 1.4 but somehow adding the 2.8 crossed my mind, because on the xpro3 the 1.4 is a bit off-balanced and for hiking/biking too heavy. then again, the images it produces even at 1.4 are amazing.... well, first world problems :)
on another note: do you like the look of the 16mm 2.8, or do you care about it? i think the 35mm f2 is beautiful, the 16mm f2.8 is kinda oddly shaped?

Both looks like great lenses but a little wide for me so my next purchase would be the 23mm f2...

Which one do you suggest for video ?
Especially not too loud with AF.

Thank you in advance.

Why don't you use the 16-55 2.8 ? No need to change lenses half way through a shoot because when changing lenses you just might miss that great shot of the day !!

the f2.8 is actually wider than the f1.4. It's probably a 15mm maybe even a 14mm.
