Who would’ve thought that removing a safety feature would make something less safe… Damn that’s crazy.

I'm a truck driver and I hate smart motorways, seen to many people break down or have accidents and no where to pull over to cause the layby is either to far or is blocked with highways vehicles parking there waiting to make a road closure

I’ve broken down on one of these and I can tell you it’s the scariest thing in the world I saw cars swerve within a few meters of my van doing 60/70 mph

The problem is exacerbated by the dangerous drivers in lane 2 or 3 who never pull over into lane one where they should be because they don't know the law.

THE BIG JOKE IS SMART motorways .. being SO DAM STUPID IDEA .. its bad enough when ppl kiled on sections with hard sholder .. so they remove the hardsholder to a live lane how DAM STUPID that was . Who ever come up with that idea needs to be locked up in prison for long time..

Smart motorways haven’t been banned. Here in Derbyshire, the conversion of the M1 into a smart motorway continues.

Less fatal accidents happen on smart Motorways than on A & B roads, just statistically more traffic. Personally I think they're pretty good.
They are responsible for less than 40 deaths over 5 years, compared to alcohol which kills nearlly 10, 000 per year. Something doesn't add up.

They’re perfectly safe so long as you don’t let idiots drive on them.

I’d rather be heading towards congestion knowing there’s congestion ahead thanks to overhead gantries signalling 40’s and VMS stating congestion than going 70mph round a tight bend and not know there’s standstill traffic ahead of me like on many A and B.

If people would stop lane hogging and just freezing when they’re breaking down or stopping dead in their tracks after an RTC then it’d make them a lot less vulnerable to be hit.

Is this video old.... M6 junct 26 - junct 21a being upgraded to smart, thus turning hard shoulder into a live lane

Smart motorways were banned because, when they were planned, the gross assumption that the motorway users were smart as well. It's a quick easy finger point to blame the technology but ignore the fact that it was a collision from another road user likely not obeying the signs.
