I did martial arts for about 15 years. My sensei told me that one time, he was backed in a dark alley by 2 guys. He found a lead pipe long enough to use it as a staff. He started to spine it around. The 2 guys paused for a moment and decided to walk away. So my sensei always said that sometimes, spinning a staff around can be enough to scare people off.

It’s actually pretty frustrating that I sometimes can’t even walk to the corner store without getting into 3 or 4 Kali stick street fights, sometimes with multiple opponents at once. Like I get that I live on an ancient Chinese mountaintop where martial combat is a way of life and one must battle to survive and become the true grand master, but sometimes I’m just trying to buy some beef jerky, you know?

So true, staff spinning is for the arts, quite literally.

Well said, Ms. Michelle.. The immaturity existing in this country today would be laughable if it wasn't so sad..

Are you kidding? Where I live it's a constant clash with other bo staff gangs. It's not so much the actual fighting, it's the hours of choreography set to music. Then the snapping in rhythm when we cross paths. So a lot more than you'd think.

I'm a martial artist who is disabled and I carry a cane. I could defend myself with my cane if I had to but there are thresholds of engagement. Unless someone is presenting physical threat or attempting to actively impede me in a small area, there are so many choices besides "hit person with cane". There is also the legal precedent that you have to think about when engaging someone. If it's not life and death, it's not time to hit them. Also all that cute bullshit you see in movies where they "duel" has no bearing on the reality.

I have to use Kali Sticks every week to defend myself. Of course that's also because if I don't, my sparring partner will whack me with his sticks. Outside of class, I've never had to fight anyone using Kali sticks or a bo staff.

Common sense is uncommon for the keyboard warriors out there who can't take a video for what it is ... a fun thing to do.

Right?! I get these garbage comments every single time I upload a video. It’s the stupidest comment I get in every single video.

Had a number of martial arts teachers and there is so much real stuff that does not show up on camera. Mom's watching Walker Texas Ranger right now and you know Chuck Norris knows what looks good on camera.

TV is not real. Martial arts has many applications besides entertainment. I always did it for health reasons. It's great for the mind as well as the body. It was yoga that gave me the mussel memory that allows me to finally have a core. When I completely relax, in the martial arts way I can feel the body straightening it's self out and everything aligning. The less I resist the more aligned my body becomes.

It's simply dumb. There are plenty of 'learn to fight' with this or that weapon videos online. And not every tool has to serve in its exact purpose all the time. If you were juggling hammers, nobody would try to ask how the skill can be used for effectively driving nails.

People want to set their personalized goalposts like that to take things away from you. Or they 'teach.' Just randomly, I don't mean like you. Had a guy do that to me the other day. Comes up to me out super of the blue and starts showing me how to strike with power with the kalis I made, and that's honestly my last priority rn.

And I don't feel I'm very good at faking interest once someone immediately makes themselves the most forgettable person in the world like that, lol.

"o wow so cool have a nice day sir thank you so much am appreciate" 🤥

Men when they see woman enjoy/be good at anything (as if it’s not clear the staffspinning is for show purposes and not part of fighting ) : 😧😱🤯

I scared an aggressive dog away with my walking stick once, but I wasn't spinning it at the time. It's like the old days, when fencing masters and dancing masters were often the same person - the skills are complementary, but they're not going to perform a minuet during a duel.

Im always looking for sticks to spin just in case someone randomly attacks me. That’s why forests are great places to spend time. So many spinny sticks.
