This is in no way denigrating Mr. Stapleton, but the icon badge is a media-industry-woke creation. Just one example when we fact check hard numbers. Most Singles certifications all-time, which is a metric slanted more towards more recent artists; Stapleton included, it goes like Wallen 106.5M, Combs 90.5M, L Bryan. 82.5M, Stapleton 59M. We could do this with many other metrics and Stapleton would be well below many active artists on the real numbers; even before we start looking current vs past artists.. Stapleton's greatest argument for icon status is that he has had a Diamond + hit, but Combs and Wallen will each have multiple Diamond records soon, and in just a few years so will Zach Bryan, whereas Stapleton's latest hits aren't hitting all that hard. If Stapleton just had something like some big album runs at #1, but he doesn't have that either. He does have a ton of subjective awards, but those have been discredited by the fact that the two awards that should always be based on objective numbers: EOTY and Single of the Year; the woke members have been voting for Singles and Entertainers as the winner that in the real world are sometimes as far down as #15 in the genre. He can be an individual's icon, but is not a genre wide icon by any objective measure except for that one Diamond record.
