Insurance shouldn't even be a conversation here. They stole her roof. They need to pay to replace it. Period.

Who starts a job without speaking to the homeowner ?

It’s not doing her roof “for free”, it’s fixing your own mistake

In 30 years, we (company I worked for and eventually co-owned, still do) did this once. The roof we removed was small-ish, and very old actually, arguably needed to be replaced. But still, this was our ERROR. We immediately explained the mistake to the owner, and said we would put a higher quality roof on immediately (higher quality than the original material that was installed on theirs). We gave them a scope of work in writing, and noted it would all of course be at zero cost. We also told them that we would remove and replace the dryrot exposed from tearing off, and that we would pay for a permit and have it inspected both the deck, and then the final inspection, and that we would walk them through this and handle it all ourselves. Point being we admitted culpability and we did this immediately. The owner agreed, we pushed this through immediately for them. That's what you have to do. Not offer a f___ing "deal" to the person. You eat it that week, you don't get paid, as owners, that week. Maybe don't eff up again (the person responsible was one of the three partners).

This is legally vandalism and she can sue for property damages.

Just the fact that they offered a "deal" instead of offering to replace it for free is mind boggling.

They almost scammed her. "Hey, we made a mistake and removed your roof. But don't worry! We got a sweet deal for you! 50% less for a new roof!"

It doesn’t matter if it’s an “honest mistake” If I removed someone’s roof I would be breaking at least three laws. What they did was illegal and the fact they only offered her a deal is freaking crazy

Hey I broke your car window by accident, I can sell you a new window at discount.

"We won't replace it free, but we'll give you a killer deal!"

That company should be dissolved immediately.

It was a honest mistake until they refuse to re-roofing it free.

Roof company: best we can do is 5% off and a apology

Why doesn't she take them to court? This is an easy case.

She shouldn’t be talking to anyone at the roofing company, her LAWYER should be doing all the talking. Be sure to place the lawyer fees as part of the settlement also

They stole the roof. I’m shocked they actually aren’t being prosecuted. How do you accidentally work on a house without confirming?

its like stealing someones tires and then giving them a a discount on tires instead of giving them their tires back

The moment the news channel got involved Five Star Roofing was all about making this problem go away. Forget insurance just call your local news team, they will take care of you.

That “deal” should be 100% off plus damages.

They took the roof off without her permission. Wrong address. Five Star Roofing should have had to pay every dime to the other company to get her a new roof. The labor and material.

Call the police. Have the roofers arrested for property damage and vandalism.
