I cried all the way through, what a beautiful creature that little donkey.

I thought it was interesting that it showed the actions of the animal rights protesters actually sent the donkey on a path of tragedy and took him away from the person who really loved him.

There's a great shot in this film - the donkey is being taken away in a trailer - as it's being transported we see the donkey's perspective inside the moving trailer - a small cramped trailer taking him/her to some eventual destination - we notice some daylight entering the trailer via a small tiny window on the side of the donkey. From this same window we then see a herd of horses galloping into frame - not a human in sight. Yes, it is a juxtaposition, beautiful in its simplicity, but you owe it to yourself to see this scene and embrace its beauty. It's why cinema was created.

Still trying to figure out why the one film I'm most excited to watch this year doesn't involve people in tights fighting each other but rather is about an existential European donkey with sad eyes.

I watched this today. I wasn't expecting it to be so intense. Interesting to think that a film from a donkey's POV is actually about humans behaving like "animals".

Masterpiece. And I understand it's not a remake in any real way, it's far better than Bresson's effort. It's just sublime. The kids petting zoo type scene started me off and I was there onwards.

I'm so unsure about watching this film. I'm a huge fan of Bresson & Au Hasard Balthazar is in my opinion one of the greatest films ever made. I cannot even begin to imagine how this could possibly compare.

From the name and thumbnail i had a horrible feeling this was a gritty origin story set in the Winnie the Pooh universe.

Just stop by to remind everyone that A.I. is and will probably always be Spielberg’s best movie. Also, yes. Eo was wonderful.

Great review, like always. Unfortunately I cannot watch a movie depicting animal abuse, even if one of the director's driving forces was his love of animals.

I don't think that the other guy understands Bresson. It's very very lazy to tag Bresson with 'religious' claims when the religious aspects of his films are overblown. Especially with 'Au Hasard Balthazar' which is obviously a microcosm of humanity. I mean, there is religious symbols is almost every western film to varying degrees, isn't there?

As amazing as EO was, 'Au Hasard Balthazar' cuts deeper because of focus on sound/imagery and the fact that it charts an entire life span. It's like the other guy hasn't even seen the film.

Soon as i read the plot i knew this was gonna have too much animal abuse in it for me to handle so unfortunately will have to give it a miss, im sure it's a really good film tho.

I didnt find this a bad film but it is an extremely difficult watch, especially if you are an animal lover. I wouldn't watch the movie again but didn't dislike it, ultimately an extremely sad and depressing outlook of how humans can treat animals.
