The writer wanted the story to be believed, but he needed the hero to "exit stage left." If Jesus is God and he doesn't die, then someone reading the story would expect to find Jesus still on earth. For example, if in the end of the Gospel he jumped from the cross and marched to the Roman Senate and kicked the Senators out to claim his throne, the writer knew people would expect he was still there. Why not? God is immortal. People executed their God and therefore allowed a mechanism for Jesus to leave the earthly story with no expectation from the reader of seeing him. That's Why...

What a crock....The disciples watch Jesus walk on water, cure blindness, cure diseases, and raise people from the dead...then they get scared that he's captured? Then executed? The only strange thing they would of thought is "Why did Jesus take so long to come back from the dead?" They would of been placing bets to see who could guess how quickly he'd miraculously come back. "Hey, he's back. Here's your twenty bucks Peter, you bet three days. I was way off with the one hour, but he did show us he could do anything before this happened so I got excited." This is an obvious ancient made up story.
