My great grandfather died in the east. They only located his grave in 2015. My grandma lost her father in 1945 and finally visited the grave of her father for the first time in 2017. She was 83 at that time.

PS: Granny is alive and well, going strongly for the 90 next year.

After the war a German tourist went to kriti Island in Greece for holidays... one day walking along in a small village in the mountains he comes across an old woman lighting the candles in front of all the graves in this old abandoned cemetery.. He asks her ( gramather why you light the candles and clean this graves... they're all German soldiers.. they were your enemies why you look after there graves??) She said ( I pray for them and look after them because my son died far away from home and I hope a mother somewhere there is also looking after my sons grave) .. He asked her ( where did your son son die grandma) she said ( in Auswitch Prison he was taken there and I never saw him again).. And that's a true story.. people who survive bad situations some times are more forgiving and tolerant of life's troubles..

Kind of depressing, some bodies are still getting discovered till this day, i wonder if they knew the name of the soldier

If a grave is found by the Russians, the grave is plundered and medals, belt buckles, buttons etc are collected and sold online.

A lot of them are not buried. On Ukraine and along the Eastern front, they say if u dig on the fields you find dog marks and bones real soon. Most of them are not burried

Many simply became fertilizer for wheat fields. The crops grew much better for several years afterwards.

In the Pacific, the US bulldozed pits then pushed the Japanese dead inside. Don't know if they bothered to mark those as mass grave sites.

In my home town in Crete there used to be a German cemetery that was turned into a football field

Such a Soviet move. They are notorious for wiping away the remains of those who are not in favor.

Probably pulled a "Poltergeist." Move the headstones but never moved the bodies.

They may have thought for the wrong side they may have been in the wrong but they still fought and died for their country what they thought was right any good soldier deserves respect in death even when they fight for the wrong side for the wrong reason death is not a toy it's not a joke it comes for everyone and should be respected

We have a large cemetery in England where most of the German POWs who died are buried. Many were so badly injured when captured, they could not survive. It's quite a moving place to visit.

“Liberated” isn’t the word I’d use to describe what the Red Army was doing.

At least my father was captured by the Americans if the Russians got him I would not be here

At least they weren't burned in mass numbers and dumped into canals or piles left in open fields.
