▶️ SONY TCD-D100 DAT Walkman is the last of it's kind and a proud representative of DAT-Technology. When it entered the market, the MiniDisc was the Digital Audio-Format for the masses. DAT was a fascinating technology and the best way for recording Audio in thousands of professional studios but also for thousands of enthusiasts. I was one of them ;-) I had the chance to buy a SONY TCD-D100 DAT Walkman in very good conditions and i was blown away by it's quality. To be honest: I did not expect a unit so solid well built. This DAT-Walkman was a last statement from SONY in so many ways: Design, Engineering, Manufacturing, Sound-Quality. I hope you did enjoy the video. If so, please rate it and leave me a comment. And don't forget to subscripe to my channel!

I have the PCM-M1 version of this player and absolutely love it. Been collecting DAT players (mostly home decks) for a few years now and grew an obsession with them when I found out you could record hi-fidelity digital recordings onto a camcorder-like tape. Characteristics such as the loading mechanism, rarity and build quality of these hi-end machines really sparked my interest. I've got a couple rare decks in my collection now. My top player I own is the original DTC-1000es in almost mint cosmetic and working condition.

I prefer the D7/D8 series. I never liked the D100's square display. It made decent peak level meters impossible.

Then again, the D100 ran off 2 batteries and Sony finally ditched the proprietary 7-pin Digital I/O that was present from D3 to D8.

Update: I got myself a D100 and it still has the 7-pin IO connector.

The main drawback was getting a helical scan head in such a small form factor. I’m going off of anecdotes, but the mechanisms in Sony portable DAT players fail fairly regularly. On the flip side, MiniDV mechs in camcorders still work after 20+ years. I don’t know what to chalk that up to, but it would have done better if the RIAA didn’t delay its introduction.

Pretty cool. Seems futuristic and classic at the same time.

Nice! I have two of these. with one remote. of course one failed, but the other is fine. Very hard to work on. I just love them. They compliment the home decks... as long as they all work. I have to fix this other one at some point, as i have yet to diagnose it after the failure.

I have one of these. I absolutely love it. I take it with me in the car, go to nature and play my Bach music. I love the moment when I open it, insert the 2 hours tape and hit play. The perfect combination: Bach's choral music and Sony tcd-100!

I've seen several pictures of this used by Edward Van Halen . The pictures started showing up in the late 80s, around the time the OU812 album came out .

That’s one fine peace of equipment! Still a ‘DAT’-fan. Used to use it professionally as well in TV-postproduction for mastering audiomixes with timecode. The Sony PCM-7030 was a beast.

I bought this same Walkman from a swap meet for $10. The vendor thought that he was selling an ordinary cassette player. My nice friend broke it.

It's incredible how you manage to flip it over and over for more than 4 minutes and avoid to show us one side of it: the one with the digital connector!
