AO3 deletes fanfics from their platform if they find out that the author is trying to monetize it

As a fan of fanfiction, I'm sad about what's happening to it. I think about how it will not be the same for people who are getting into it in the future. Fanfiction was such a large part of my life growing up. I loved and still do love fanfic communities.

Didn't think we need a rant about not selling fanfictions but here we are. People making money with other peoples' free work is just... well, I agree with everything you said 🐢💖

the amount of Manacled bookbinds I saw when I was scrolling through Etsy is insane
like how do people seriously not realize just how harmful this is to fandom, let alone disrespectful to the author

I’m just infuriated by the binders who are selling too. What happened to art trades? Or learning a new skill yourself? How do y’all not remember the early days where you had a multi paragraph disclaimer that you as the fanfic author didn’t own the characters or world you were writing about??!
OR how about that senlinyu, author of Manacled, has a book deal for their serial numbers filed off version of manacled which is now, crucially, original fiction and thus ethical and legal to exchange money for?? At least then the author of the fic actually gets compensated for their work instead of the guy who took their work and gave it new packaging.
Yeah, that’s some HP fandom entitlement for sure. Because babe, even if you can’t bind books yourself or do anything creative in exchange to trade with someone who does…. It’s there available to read for free online??
I feel insane that this is even a discussion we need to have.

Yeah. If the author says it's okay to bind their fanfic, you can, BUT DON'T SELL IT OR PUT IT ON GOODREADS! I got into fanfic in the mid-late 2010s as a preteen and 12-13 year old me knew to not monetize it. Wth are people doing?

People so unaware of the way fanfic falls into a legal loophole. Publishers are going to stop looking the other way when we're doing shit like adding it on Gpodreads/Storygraph or selling bound copies. They didn't have to deal w disclaimers and authors suing them and it shows.

So happy to have stumbled upon a second channel that covers the fanfiction area of Fandom! Discovered you with your take on Portia Featherington, and now I'm exploring the rest of your vudeos 😁

great video! im someone who mainly consumes fan fiction as a form of reading and i miss the close knitted fandom experience, because now i feel like there's a thick barrier between the writer and the readers. fic writers are basically just treated as "content creators" </3 + the rise of booktok doesnt help at all imo

(also i clicked on this out of excitement because im wearing the same shirt as you rn lmao)

I paid to have my fave fic bound. In 1 copy. For me. Sure, I paid, not for the content, but the expertise. And I'm okay with that. But to print to sell is just asinine, why push it. If the legailty of fanfiction ever get tried it might really end in disaster if ppl keep pushing the boundaries.

manacled is being published as a real book tho, the author got picked up by a company and is now re working the story to be sold as a compleatly different book that isnt attached to the harry potter universe. and this happens all the time, fifty shades of gray was a twilight fan fic before it was reworked.

When I was in the fandom, there were a LOT of authors selling their fics in book form. And it drove me crazy. I even brought up this topic in the fandom chats/groups, but in the end, I ended up being “petty and jealous” and received a ton of hate from these authors and their fans. And these, for a second, were VERY POPULAR authors with large fan bases.
Fans of my fics have also approached me more than once and said they would happily buy the book version of their favorite stories. My answer has always been that they can print my fics if they want - I don't mind - but I will never sell FANFIC. For me, it was and remains immoral to this day. I don't even consider rewriting fanfiction into original stories because the characters in those stories are NOT MINE. Not only will I have to change their names, but also their personalities, which will affect the plot. At this point, it's easier to write an original story from scratch.

I love the enthusiasm of the new fanfic girlies, but they need to learn the rules that the old heads have learned through years of tripping and stumbling. I started reading fanfic in like 2006ish? At like 10ish Naruto NaruHina fics (I see you NaruSasu girlie) and many fandoms since and many still put that old disclaimer up top (I don't own and I'm not making any money, plz don't sue) the youths don't know the legal fire and brimstone old fandoms were forged in back then lol I just hope they don't spark anything back up with this tiktok consumerism trap 😢

I'm an Harry Potter fan, as many other kids I enjoyed reading the books and seeing the movies and now I'm going to be an adult and I had an idea that before turning 18 I would read all other again Harry Potter so that in a way I remember one last time one of my fondest childhood memories, but then the J.K Rowling situation happened. After listening to the many opinions of trans people I distanced myself from the franchise (although I still enjoy it as one of my first reads) for obvious reasons after looking back on it to see the many problems within the books but also the author.
At the same time I was discovering new fandoms thanks to fan fictions regarding A song of fire and ice/Blood and fire, Percy Jacksons, The Witcher and others and those are medias that I adore not only do I appreciate the adaptation of the source material ( except the Percy Jackson movies) but I also love what fans do with it with fan fictions like the ship Gerlion/Geraskier which is a romance between Geralt of Rivia and Jaskier/Dandelion from The Witcher and it makes me want to write a fan fiction in that same universe with the main character and a OC of mine while also wanting to write a story inspired by Percy Jackson.
Do I love what is going on with fan fictions right now? Absolutely not, for me if your work is directly happening in the universe of an author that established it through many books and that you try to make money out of it than get lost and never come see me again. But if you are inspired by a universe that already exists that makes you want to write a story with your own characters, your own laws and all with specific themes to tackle than go for it give it a shot and if you don't want to published it share it at least with friends that you trust, if you want.
By the way your video is amazing I though I was the only one noticing this, but glad I'm not alone, since I'm not native I may have had trouble understanding some things so I wouldn't be surprised that due to some mistake of understanding my comment just looses of it's meaning so if that is the case please correct me.

Why would anyone spend money on something available for free? It's weird.🫤
I believe most authors know about the fanfic and are flattered and often amused. However... plagiari$m... especially if you're selling it... big no no.
