I’m new to your site and find it very helpful. I understand your emphasis on using the Best Practice check list to confirm I’m being properly treated to its standards and I have made a copy of the Best Practice forms you have made available on your web site which I’ll be taking it with me to my first fitting of hearing aids in about two weeks. I’m a little concerned she may be insulted by me asking here to fill them out but as a doctor of audiology she should understand the importance of following them. Thanks a lot Dr. Cliff for all the information you pass on to your followers, it’s very appreciated..

Pretty much the first thing you need to know is do they let you pick any hearing aid or are they conflicted with only one aid company. If they only off one hearing aid brand you should walk away.

we Drive 93miles to get my Cochlear Implants tested, but there are clinics that are not that far away, but we choose them, because they have the better equipment to test Ci‘s. There are clinics, which do that as well but not on that high level as them who are 93 miles away.

Some things to consider is that the first person answering the phone is usually not going to be the audiologist, and they may not be informed about Best Practices or know what they are. I have a well-established practice and follow best practices, and educate my staff about them. But my newer staff are not going to be well-versed in them enough to be able to answer questions about them as well as some of the other staff. Please take this into consideration and ask whoever you get if they know what Best Practices are, or if there is someone else on staff who can answer those questions.

Similarly, you could also get someone answering the phone who just BS’s their way through the answers but doesn’t really know what you’re asking about. It’s best to ask more specific questions than to be general (ie “do you do Real Ear Measures?; do you have Aural Rehabilitation classes?; do your tests take place in a sound proof booth?; do you do speech in noise testing?”).

The theory is very good but I am also very doubtful about your recommended approach. "Call around" to determine if this list is followed? From who, the receptionist? An AuD we've never seen before gives us a lengthy interview? Or get an appt and then sit the audiologist down for what amounts to be a competency test? Point out where the audiologist says s/he is following best practice but I think s/he is not? Ask the AuD to sign each page "confirming" they have done the right thing (and doesn't that imply something could follow)? Very few doctors are going to either sit or stand for this. Maybe they should, but I just don't think this is realistic. And btw, while I live in a 6M+ major metro area, there is only one AuD in your network here (she doesn't accept my insurance), the next closest is 4+ hours; also not realistic. Finally, doesn't your list by definition exclude seeing any provider who is not an actual Doctor of Audiology? If so, that should be made clear (and if not, why not).
