Let's start from square one: A lot of people in America have done mini school bus conversions, the massive boxy shape helps a lot. If you are set on a van I would recommend a newer Sprinter, Transit, or Promaster (It's called a Dodge Promaster in the states, not sure about the UK). The size will depend on what you're going to use it for, if you're just going out on the weekends and staying in campsites, a smaller van without a bathroom will do, if you want to be off the grid, bigger is generally better.

I would HIGHLY recommend buying new, if you buy used, you don't know how the previous owners treated it. When you check them out, do it in person, when taking measurements, don't forget that you will have insulation and decor so get a van that seems bigger than you need.

It seems obvious but try getting a van with windows pre-installed from the factory, cutting and installing your own is a bit of a pain. I would also watch as many van tours as you can, people generally go over mistakes they made the first time around, this helps save a lot of hassle later on.

I know there was someone on TikTok did a van conversion and they had the bed on a lift up motor so during the day it was up against the roof so the space could be utilised in other ways, then use the remote to bring the bed down to floor level for sleeping

My girlfriend and I are going to be converting a van really soon! The best kinds are Mercedes sprinter (has a high roof!) or a Renault master, anything like that is the best! Also got to think of what you want in it x

So exciting that you want to do a van build! I just finished my 2012 ford transit connect micro camper. I loved it so much I’m working on starting a blog and hopefully a business doing conversions as a business one day. As far as what van you want you really just need to sit down and ask yourself what is important to you. For example: how long of trips are you going to take? Do you care about gas mileage or expense of fixing any mechanical issues? Do you want room for a toilet or shower? What kind of electrical devices do you want access to?
If you just want a weekend getaway kind of thing I’d lean towards something with a smaller wheel base because it’ll be easier to drive and park, and you really don’t need a shower if you aren’t living in it. But coming from someone who just converted a van that you cannot stand up in I would recommend getting something you can stand in, it makes everything including the conversion itself more comfortable. You can stand up in a sprinter or you can get a high top or pop top too!

My Dad recently bought a van and converted it. It wasn’t cheap but it means he can work away from home whilst enjoying breaks in the UK. He’s had tables, beds, fridges, cookers etc all installed plus WiFi and plugs/usb ports for mobile working. He’s a fantastic idea as I think travelling away will be disturbed for a while! X
