New Mexico State Is The Best Story In College Football | The Touchback

New Mexico State may have lost to Liberty in the Conference USA championship but make no mistake, the Aggies are the best story in college football this season. A historically lousy program with limited resources that has found a way to punch above its weight, at least for a moment.

For the first time since 1967 and 1968, the Aggies have finished with a winning record for consecutive seasons. And for the first time since those back-to-back Sun Bowl trips, the team is going bowling.

The college football landscape is wildly different now than it was back then. That is what, perhaps, makes NMSU’s achievements today all the more remarkable. We are in a time when money is everything, yet the Aggies have found a way to do more with less.

Look, it’s not sustainable long term. And New Mexico State has probably reached its peak as a college football program. A few winning seasons mixed in with a few losing seasons is likely the best the school could hope for. And certainly, a lot of this success has to be attributed to Head Coach Jerry Kill. Who knows if that level can be maintained should he eventually leave?

However, when you look at the previous 50+ years of New Mexico State football along with the current realities of the sport, what this program has accomplished is better than anything else that has happened in college football this year.

About The Touchback
#takeitouttothe25

The Touchback is the world’s best sports and culture website…or something like that. The site is the brainchild of Andrew Davis and Cheyenne Hollis, two American expats wanting to bring a different perspective to sports, fantasy, betting and a bunch of other random stuff. You’ll either really like it or really hate it. But it’s worth reading either way.

I go to school at NMSU and these past 2 seasons have been the best times for me and the fans because your football team is actually good for the first time in years

I have very fond memories of the year when Fresno state led by Derek Carr and Davante Adams went to the Las Vegas bowl against USC. That was magical season for Fresno, and even though they lost, I will always remember that season. That must be how New Mexico State fans are feeling right now. Happy that they got to be a part of the season as a fan.

I graduated high school in 2015, got accepted to NMSU, but didn’t want to move that far south (from Northern NY). I’ve always had this weird connection with the school since then, using them in NCAA14 for 10 years, watching any game they had on television, following them on social medias, etc. but this was a cool deep dive into their back story! Thanks for the history lesson!

I saw their game vs. Liberty was going to be on last night, and I had to do a double-take. I was like, wait, what, New Mexico State is playing for a conference championship? I had to look up what conference was this? And then I saw that they destroyed Auburn (and I thought of you 😂). So, I watched a little of the game, obviously going back and forth between their game and the Pac-12 game. I knew of ONE alum from New Mexico St, a FB friend of mine from Modesto. I knew the kid was an accomplished running back from the school, and he tried so very hard to train for the NFL after his college days. So, for the purpose of this video, I looked up his stats at NMS, and the first article that came up from ESPN spoke of how he got suspended for beating up his girlfriend 😣So, I will not mention him here.

They were the best story in college football. Unfortunately, as is the case with many G5's, their entire team and coaching staff was raided after the year.
