Is Maastricht our FAVORITE Dutch City?

We were on an epic road trip through Germay, Belgium, and The Netherlands from our home in Amsterdam and found the time to stop and spend a few hours in Maastricht.

We had an awesome time as we did a little bit of sight-seeing, tasted the local sweet treats and soaked up as much as we could, quickly!

✼ ABOUT US ✼
We are Nate and Katrina, two Americans living in Amsterdam, The Netherlands and traveling as much as we can to see what there is to see! Call us expats, immigrants, whatever... just call us already.

We balance work life with travel... as best we can! We would love to visit every country in Europe while we live here, and definitely keep a list of our global “must visit” destinations.

We try to give you a true view of us and how we travel and explore the world. Lots of food, definitely some jokes, and probably some swearing…. Hope you enjoy taking these trips with us!

When I visit Maastricht I feel like I'm abroad. People dress better, the food is better, the vibe is more chill 😂

You went to Reitz, and didn't get the "zuurvlees", but ketchup? You missed out on that one! Fun fact: Reitz is the oldes fryshop in The Netherlands. Has been there since 1909.

Hii! Great you visited our country. Maastricht-girl here 😁 It’s a nice video with a couple of “flaws”… You ate the wrong food at Reitz since eating the fries with ketchup is kinda not done here 😆 The tradition would have been the fries with zuurvlees and mayonnaise. You were at the museum located at the Vrijthof, which is the most famous historical square in town but you didn’t show it. And then… the name Maastricht… translated the city of the Maas, the Meuse, the river surrounded by beautiful places and a historical bridge leading to the modern part you visited last through a beautiful historical part of the city. Another tip would be to visit the surrounding Heuvelland -land of the hills, with its beautiful nature, typical “vakwerk”houses and little villages and towns like Valkenburg. I hope you’ll enjoy these tips on your next time around! 😃

The Helpoort was the entrance to the city during the night. All other "big gated" entrances were closed. Because it is a narrow entrance it was very difficult for carriages to enter (you can see the marks these carriages made during centuries). So it was "hell" to get into the city. That is where the name came from.

You don't come all the way to Maastricht to eat some fries with some basic ketchup!😱🤦‍♂️🚮 He is famous for his Limburgs Zuurvlees. So you have to come back again especially for that trust me🙈🙏

Great video of Maastricht. The place with history, where the 4th musketeer d'Artagnan died during a battle. His statue is in the Aldenhof Park. The painting of the Night Watch was located in the Marl Caves of Maastricht, etc... When you return to Maastricht, in addition to the city, also visit St. Peter's Hill and have a bite to eat in the Slavante restaurant with a beautiful view over the Maas. Visit the museum of illusions, the ENCI quarry.... Maastricht will continue to amaze you with its history and splendor. Plenty to see and do in Maastricht👍🏻

It's called hels gate because if people had leprosy they would brought them out of the city to a house at the other side of the wall. To the hell

Recommendations for next time: The statue of the original musketeer D'Artagnan, he was killed during the siege of Maastricht in 1673. The caves of the Sint Pietersberg. The Sint Servaas treasury is also quite impressive. If you are interested in natural history, Natuurhistorisch Museum, lots of info on how the hills of south Limburg came to be and dinosaur fossils. Close to Maastricht: the Netherlands American Cemetery, many of our brave liberators rest here and it has a newly opened visitor center.

Katrina is absolutely right, there used to be a not-Limburg, Limburgse vlaai chain. And it was so mèh in comparison to our vlaai.
I live less than 20 minutes from Maastricht, went to school there, go there at least once a month to shop. I walk past that bakery so often, know the mill, but I have never stopped there for vlaai. One of my favorite things to do, is visiting the bookstore, grabbing a cop of coffee and people watch.

The street behind the Hellgate used to be called the Hellstreet but A rich family living there didnt like it and the streetname was changed to St.Bernardusstreet. Extra note my grandmother was born in this street.

There are actually two bookstores in churches in the Netherlands. Both very beautiful and both in very beautiful cities.
The other one is in Zwolle. Please feel welcome to visit! You will also like an other church there (Grote Kerk) on which you can climb on the roof now temporarily because of Hanzeyear. Let me know if you need a guide!

I’ve been a few times to Maastricht including one time when I ran a marathon from Vise in Belgium along the Meuse/Maas. My only marathon in two countries. I’m going back this coming weekend to do a Parkrun and to enjoy the Christmas market.

the helpoort was used to carry out plague victems out of the city thats also where the name comes from.
we are actually one of 2 possible oldest cities nijmegen is another posibillity we just don't know which is older
the basilica of our lady is actually our sweet lady (in dutch its onze lieve vrouwenkerk)
past of the foundation of that church is from the old roman bridge that used to cross the river

next time you go i reccomend the caves and kazamatten (both underground tunnels but diffrent) also fort sint pieter on the hill and the little cafe next to it
