This album feels like the final form of their genre blending style. They’ve taken all the best genres of metal and rock over the years and made it their own, this one feels like they refined it even more. There’s even some almost 80s ballad sounding tracks but mastodons version of it. So good.

Its a more mature Mastodon, the guitar work is amazing. This is very proggy album, cant wait to get my vinyl copy. It has some beautiful songs like I had it all. Great review as always. It really is an album that needs to be heard with attention to detail.

Great video! You fleshed out your ideas and examples well. A lot of "reviewers" just say they do or don't like it but don't explain why lol so good on you for providing context.

Great review. Such a shame to see so many people hating on this album already. A Mastodon album is like a bottle of fine wine, you've got to let it breathe a bit first and then you can truly enjoy it. This is up there with Crack the Skye for me. As you said at the beginning "It's an Opus" and it really is. I love their early sound but I can definitely appreciate their maturing over the years and they've matured so well. Brent's solo's on this album are so much more deliberate. His solo's always sounded so obscure and like they were just recorded while he was in the moment but these new solo's are so well written and tie in beautifully with everything else going on in the songs and are also really well structured. I think Danny Carey done them a huge favour too by suggesting David Bottrill as a producer. I now have a week off work and I'm going to have this masterpiece playing quite a lot. Keep up the great work 🤘😁🤘

great review man. good to hear a some positive observations on this album. I am finding more well established critics are getting a bit jaded in their " critique " of musicians work. I like to remind people that a year ago these guys were pretty much broke, couldn't tour and had to put their staff on unemployment insurance. Mastadon was broke, WTF. and then they come out with THIS . its so utterly commendable. Troys vocals are on a whole new level. I mean listen to the melody on the chorus to Pain with an Anchor. Fucking amazing. I love this band.

It’s there best record since crack the skye by a long shot. Skeleton of splendor might be one of their best songs. I think it’s better than blood mountain. On last with leviathan. Maybe a little behind crack the skye. The metal purists are gonna hate it. It’s so dense and it’s so demanding the playing is just otherworldly good and it’s so dynamic. To me it’s just an absolute triumph. From a band that’s been trying not for a decade to appeal to the masses, for them to say fuck it and release this eclectic, dark, and dynamic album is refreshing. Best of the year. I like it better than The Work.

More Than I Could Chew, perhaps one of their finest songs.

This album hit me a lot harder emotionally than I was ready for. Especially when reading the lyrics along with it. I definitely think Brent should've had a bit more vocal presence and maybe Brann a bit less but I think it's their best work since CTS.

I think you're right about giving the album time. Whilst Pushing the Tides was really immediate for me, the rest of the album started for me as "that was pretty good" after the 1st listen, and moved to "this is brilliant" after the 2nd listen. But regarding their "1st ballad", Jaguar God was quite the ballad, don't you think? And a brilliant one.
Great review though. Really concise and informative - a great insight into the theme of the album.

I agree, the length of it was overwhelming at first, but once you get used to it, you'll love it!

Oh man, I didn't realize that Marcus King plays on The Beast, you've learned me something! This is an incredible album. I haven't been able to listen to anything else all weekend, it's some of their best work...the sad irony of working with a new producer, pain certainly inspires great art

For me, the new Mastodon album "Hushed and Grimm" is a pure musical masterpiece from all angles, execution of instruments, singing, melody, rhythm and lyrics. The very top of the current album is the purest emotions that all the band members expressed in this album. For me, progressively, Mastodon grew and grew from album to album, reaching an explosion in the most inviting sense on this album. We can only imagine their future steps to what limits they will reach. The production of this album is a special story and in my opinion the purest so far, counting all their previous albums. All the songs on the album are a special musical experience in themselves, especially if we delve into the messages and emotions that come from each song. Competitor for Album of the Year and for me it’s a rating 10/10.
