The amount of Spongebob references I still make as an adult is incredible and I didn’t even realize how often I do it until now. In other words...NE HOY MINOY HOY MENYOY!

Wow. I'm 22 and I recognize the episodes for every clip you used. If you did the same episode about the Fairly Odd Parents... Yeah, no I have no recollection of that show despite enjoying it every bit as much.

Not a day goes by that a couple of my best friends and I don't quote something from this show. Love the essay!

I wrote an article in highschool about Spongebob and the hidden moral lessons in the first few seasons, needless to say, everyone was enlightened.

I can really relate when you talk about "story" in relation to the simple basics of Spongebob's character. As an artist, looking back, I'm not so impressed with the art style or design even though it's very well iconic, but the story really built the franchise for me, even though I didn't realize that as a kid. It's very interesting to look at how inverted the cartoon is compared to many. Very nice essay man. You deserve a bigger audience lol

another reason it was so much more influential: it's story was so realistic. you have a minimum wage protagonist, a best friend that's even dumber, a cynical failed artist, and a greedy and petty boss. he has a friend that works out all the time, a female friend that he has no sexual interest in yet tries to stay tied to, etc, etc.

notice they didn't make him a little kid, they didn't make his life perfect in some fantasy world, and they didn't let spongebob always get what he wanted. he had consequences and failures. shows like "paw patrol", which kids these days may be more keen on watching, are so weak in storytelling because they don't care about it. you will always remember the plot to most spongebob episodes if you are reminded. they will NEVER remember ANYTHING that happens in "paw patrol" or shows like that.

spongebob taught me that if you work hard and live life day to day, you can be happy. you're not going to always get what you want in life (squidward). not all your friends will be very successful in life (patrick). some people will be better than you, get more girls than you, and be much more popular than you (larry).

and, most importantly, that if you show love to those around you all the time, things might just be alright (spongebob).

Cool to see somebody analyzing this show. I never watched Spongebob as a kid, but when I went back to see it as a young adult, I was consistently shocked at how brilliant some of the surrealist humor was. Good stuff.

Back in the hay day when spongebob was a little smarter and more slice of life watching it was like a box of chocolates. Short, sweet, unpredictable and carries its themes in memorable ways

I loved that he only used clips from the OG episodes lol

To me I think one of the real appeals of SpongeBob is how it managed to really put comedy before everything. Everything the entire story of every episode beginning middle and end is in service to the comedy and it is a farce in all the best possible ways. If there was a joke to be told they would tell it if there was a situation to be had it would happen anything goes and SpongeBob and it's glorious and it's all centered on a simple but elegantly executed character who perfectly captures that.... SpongeBob is a character who could fit in any situation because of as you described he lacks any sense of Doubt or existential ideologies. The show is SpongeBob the show is the most playful and childish thing around while so many other 90's cartoons try to actually be more adult and sophisticated even from a comedy standpoint you know a lot of them were really trying to make stuff for adults in mind but SpongeBob was pure playful and such a show could not have been executed so well if its main character wasn't as equally playful and childish as it. And getting back on topic jokes jokes jokes jokes jokes jokes jokes jokes jokes jokes jokes jokes non-stop jokes There is almost nothing you could ever watch in one episode of SpongeBob and not find something that could make you happy that can make you laugh that you will quote from now until your judgement I don't pretend that there's some magic formula that makes a great show a phenomenon but this is it the writing is on the wall here and yes every episode has a story but I'd argue that that wasn't actually it's a appeal. it's just the stories were so good because they had to be because they were in service to the jokes. in order to basically do whatever they wanted they needed a great setup and a great plot with a beginning middle and end that way they can tell as many jokes as they could within the confines of 11 minutes

I think Spongebob's personalty is very lovable, he's sweet, innocent, childish and unmasculine, he loves his job and works hard, even though it's kind of job that's often seen as menial and exploitative of it's employees, he's rather..unsmart, he's the kind of character you might expect to the the butt of the joke in some other cartoon, but instead he's treated as relatable and I appreciate that.

Great video! I personally think the reason people love spongebob is the laid back and relaxing atmosphere that isn’t harsh looking. It’s a very inviting world with soothing music and great characters

I never thought about how the other shows were so formulaic in nature. I also relegated that to the super obvious scooby doo formula but something like fairly odd parents has a formula of "Timmy's dissatisfaction ->wish->trouble caused by wish->fixing it/learning a lesson" however spongebob could literally be about anything and because every episode is so different, they all stand out
