- Switzerland was and is heavily fortified
- Mandatory National service and a general liking for guns, means a)lots of arms b) lots of people who can use them
- Terrain. Successfully invading an extremely mountainous country is very difficult, especially with the defenders being used to the terrain
- Swiss are fiercely patriotic, it would be a very costly campaign
