People expecting near excavator>zen1 IPC jumps in the 40% range are crazy

0:07 - Damn, that "So.." at the very beginning had some *sass* on it. 😆

I got high hopes for Zen 5’s AVX512 implementation. We’ll finally be able to perfectly emulate PS3 with RPCS3

An IPC uplift of 15% is really good IMO.

Quick explainer. When they say IPC gain, they don't mean ALL instructions will get faster. Talking about x86 assembly, say a memory load with a cache hit is already 1 clock cycle, you can't improve that further.

But if a 512-bit FP multiply has the silicon to do the operation in 10 clock cycles rather than having to break it into 2 256-bit + carry operations in 20 clock cycles, that's where you get a huge IPC lift. In this case, the IPC uplift is not 100% because you still need to do a memory load operation of 1024-bit which is dependent on your L3 cache and RAM CAS latency so in essence, the CPU is still restricted by the RAM CL timing.

I wish they would not make us wait so long for the X3D variant. I really want to do a build around the 9800x3d asap, but i bet they make us wait till 2025 CES

There seems to be some odd editing in this video, especially at 14:50 where it abruptly cuts off, should probably look into that

It's come to my attention that a picture in my recent video is fake. However, every quote in said video took input from long-term sources that insist it's correct.

Thus, I've decided to pull the pic, but leave the video up. I apologize for my mistake, but stand by what remains. Any overlap in the remaining Zen 5 IPC video with some trolling operation, is just that – overlap with the truth.

Zen 5 looks to be a pretty decent uplift over Zen 4, and I'm pretty happy with it. It'll still be a while before I move on from my 5800X3D; in fact I might actually end up getting Zen 6 instead, but this kind of uplift on Zen 5 gives me confidence for my next CPU to be much, much faster. Maybe even over 1.5x as fast in gaming - that's an upgrade I'll be happy to make.

If Zen 5 actually has a 20% uplift in IPC on average, that already makes it better than every previous Zen over Zen uplift. People who were expecting a 40% uplift were on some cheap crack, I swear.

14%-26% is quite a big range though, sounds very "catch all"

Bruh, I literally maintain an app that gets around a 50% IPC uplift with Zen 4 over Zen 3. Yeah, it's more of an art than a science to come up with IPC claims, I agree.

Vex: -Do they send you review samples?
Tom: -No, they don't
Vex losing control of his laugh: -I think, it's because of these leaks...

Dude, Tom's giant face at the beginning was a bit of a shocker. Hilarious

Ive been hearing 16-22% IPC and 5.8Ghz max boost on the 16 core part. I have a few friends who work at AMD. Love your videos Tom! Don’t know why you have so many haters now, you are right 75% of the time. Disregard them, you are doing great keeping tech journalism alive!

People on some comments act like there were no timestamps XD.

Good video btw :D.

So good that you always bring a dose of reality to the overhyped IPC claims every generation! Keep up the great work!

Seems like the video wasnt edited correctly? Cut too soon?

The most important thing for AMD is to keep efficiency and total power consumption in check, it's what made mid 2000s Athlon64 so great and it's what made Zen so great.

I think it doesn't matter who will be 5% faster, but Intel needs to fix power consumption to become competitive again.
