Kia ora! And welcome back. Today I'm reviewing a civ that's very close to home - the closest thing to New Zealand in Civilization 5, even brandishing the mighty early game unit the Maori Warrior, it's Polynesia! Led by Kamehameha, polynesia is a water-fearing, ocean exploring early-game civ in civ 5, with an impressive moai tile improvement that earns big culture (and also gold and tourism once enhanced)!

Thanks for watching!

I picked Polynesia the first time I played Civ 5, so I'll always have a soft spot for playing them. Being able to embark so early is one of my favorite advantages of any civs since it's such a flexible ability - though my familiarity with Polynesia meant the first game I played as another civ, I was frustrated at just how long it took to be able to cross the ocean lmao

Poly gets so much more access to ancient ruins and luxuries due to early embark over oceans. A strong finish always starts with a strong start and on a ton of maps the first 60 or so turns of poly are very strong indeed.

Been really wanting to go to New Zealand. Admittedly, I think in your accent (I'm American) when I play 😅 it helps me strategize

I've recently got my first ever proper deity victory as Polynesia by winning a science victory. I usually play really passively, preferring to bribe the AIs into fighting each other rather than building a military. I have policy saving on and so it really easily allows me to finish rationalism early and to get to purchasing space parts with gold in the freedom ideology. The thing I think you didn't mention is that when settling cities you should look for 2 wide areas near the ocean to allow each tile improvement to give 5-6 culture. I even usually build them over stuff such as mines, farms and even on occasion building the tile improvement over upgrading a luxury (if I have a spare pair). Another thing is that due to the insane amount of culture you produce your city will often grow into the full 5 tiles out allowing you to get other luxuries usually out of range.
I don't try to war until at least modern era so built scouts for the slightly faster early game exploring. I might try and win a culture victory as them soon.

OMG I am MAori and I miss this game. I only played a little bit cuz its quite difficult to learn when your new. But I have been playing Age of Wonders Planetfall. Maybe I should get back into Civ5 and give it another go! But I would probably play Rome, Babylon or Germanic barbarians.

Could u please do civ 5 vox populi guides instead of these? Becouse most of the civ 5 players now are using vox populi mod which makes game much better

Definitely not the civ for me, based entirely on my real-world dislike for Kamehameha I. The man is revered as a hero in the Hawaiian Islands, instead of the genocidal maniac he actually was. Not in the ancient times...the 1780s. Plus, his civ mucked around in the Ancient Era for millennia, until he acquired cannons from English explorers. Should have been a city-state, instead of a faction, imo.
