Surface Duo first look: Microsoft's foldable Android phone

Microsoft surprised us with the Surface Duo this week. It’s the long-awaited Surface phone that has been rumored for years, and in a further surprise, it’s running Google’s Android operating system. The Surface Duo has two 5.6-inch displays that fold out into a 8.3-inch overall screen, and it’s just 4.8mm thin.

I really like this over a folding display. It’s useful and still really premium. It’s like a netbook in your pocket

The Little one seems to have a lot of potential in my opinion. It can be used as a pocketbook by businessmen, or an emulation device by gamers, it's cool even for casual people who want to multitask without dealing whit a bumpy flexible display.
If money wasn't an issue I would definitely buy it.

Yes, this is exactly it, the road to convergence! Right now we're at a weird point where we have really cool devices that mix form factors, but also pretty far from having a phone that is also a tablet that is also a laptop that is also a desktop (that is also an AR/VR headset?) in a comfortable way. For the next decade though, they have found the best mixes that make sense with our current technology (much better than the competition imho), and I applaud them for that.

Reading an ebook on the Duo or even in the Neo would be brilliant. Hopefully Kindle app would be optimised to do this as apps get ready for dual screen.

I think the key here is that it folds and closes completely. In the same way a laptop is closed and it's just a self contained closed box, I think the feeling of a front panel 'always exposed' phone being an always 'open' thing, does something to the way you use it. Who knows, maybe it won't change a thing, but I really like this for some reason. Maybe I just loved the phone in Her (the film).

I could see myself using this to write more often (the Duo). To actually do the kinda work that smartphones were supposed to be good for.
On the go, quick document editing and such.
