I keep forgetting that Bligh was a real person, given how Mutiny on the Bounty is so famously a book and movies rather than just history.

Bligh. Nelson's ship at the time was HMS Victory and he was soon to be victorious at Trafalgar and die in battle. State funeral not court martial.

I said Nelson. .... When Nelson was wrong I immediately said: "What's the name of the guy from the HMS Bounty who went to Pitcairn Island?" But in the remaining handful of seconds could only think of 'Pitcairn' and 'Bounty.'

It specifically said "Captain". Nelson could not have been the answer; he had been an admiral for several years. Eliminating those who were then too young to be a Captain, and those who were also in the Admiralty, that really left Bligh has having notoriety.

All of them questioned Nelson, but not many Americans know British sea captains in history.

I almost said John Paul Jones, but then I remembered that he wasn't a Brit. So I came up with my correct backup answer. I could've also chosen Chris Squire, but that would've been ridiculous!
