What's Your Favourite Film Stock? (My Surprising Survey Results)

🎬 Main Video Equipment

🎤 Audio gear for podcasts and Youtube Videos we use or recommend

For photo walks
And in the studio we use

For podcasting I recommend using a dynamic microphone as it will reject a lot of room sound and background noise. The most important part is to make sure you are as close as you can comfortably be. Using a pop filter can help reduce sibilance and plosives as well.

Unless you have a really high quality preamp a level booster will give you a much cleaner sound

That Fomapan you’ve got in the fridge is a solid budget film. Sometimes it’s even cheaper when it’s rebadged as Arista EDU. Loved the variety of images.

Surprising no one said Kodachrome ! Last roll developed 2011 . Not that long ago ! Something just oh so unique about it . Only film stock that had a song written about it ! (Paul Simon)

So many talented photographers! Very interesting that Portra was so low. Demonstrates how diverse the film community is. Bodes well for he future that film photographers want huge range and variety in their film stocks. *cough fuijifilm you listening cough cough*

No Cinestill? I'm amazed. Truly it is my favorite. Karin Majoka has made some incredible images with it. Thanks for another great video.

Great video! Please understand as you read my answer that I'm really really really old. Lol! My all time overall favorite is Velvia 50. I quite often push it one stop for the added warmth. Kodak Ektachrome is a close second. For color print, Ektar. I first started shooting it in the late 80's when it came in ISO 25 and 125. For b&w a toss up between Fuji Acros 100 and Ilford Delta 100. I have a couple rolls of HP5+ in the freezer so that may change. I shoot 35mm and 6x7 and once in a blue moon 4x5. So there ya go!😉

These are my favourites:
Cinestill 800T - Extremely situational, but produces incredible shots under artificial light.
Kodak Portra 800 - Extremely non-situational, seems to be amazing everywhere. I wish it were cheaper though.
Fuji Superia 400 - Used to be my favourite cheap film until it got less cheap. A good all rounder.
Kodak Colorplus 200 - The ultimate beach film.
Kodak Ektar 100 - Super clean and vibrant.

Stellar shots all around!! Great to see everyone exploring the range of possibilities of each stock, discovering how each stock reacts so differently, and not fighting it, but embracing it as a key part of the creative process.

I love that you can just hear that iconic Jason style, even when someone else reads it. My favourite color stock is probably ultramax 400, tho I had to now stock up with gold because of the shortages. As for black and white, gotta go with fomapan 400. Foma not just because I'm a patriot and it's dirt cheap here, but because you get quite the specific look from that stock

Kodachrome 64. Is without a doubt, the best film ever made. And sadly missed.

Ektar is number one in my book to. Interesting fact is there used to be a 25 and 1000 ISO version's of Ektar in the 90s. Love these type of videos, looking forward to more.

I think one reason (other than price) that Polaroid integral isn't a more common choice is that it's not always immediately considered a film, or a serious film. I wish I could get a roll film that renders skies and reds like the SX-70 film does. I also think that the Polaroid cameras used most commonly make it look worse. I'm not sure I can pick a favorite, really. I miss the old Portras, though 800 does have some of that magic. I think Ferrania P30 is stunning, too. So many options ...

What a cool video, thanks for featuring my photo, Lucy! I feel silly for writing Kodak Gold 400 and not 200, though 🤦‍♂️ Hearing people describe their favourite qualities of various film stocks is a gold mine for inspiration, definitely a video I'll revisit in the future 👏

It's interesting to me the Polaroid videos don't get as much engagement, as Polaroid and Instax were our gateway drugs into 35mm photography last year. I have done some street photography with the Instax SQ6 before, but now that we have a 35mm SLR, the instant cameras feel mostly like special occasion cameras for social events. That said, seeing people react to the photo appearing before their eyes is magical (particularly with instax where you don't have to keep the photo in a pocket for ten minutes) and completely unique to instant film 😊
