PATH: the Train from New Jersey to New York City

The New York City subway is an iconic symbol of the city, but did you know there is another rapid transit network that serves Manhattan? The distinctive blue Port Authority Trans-Hudson trains (PATH, for short) travel underneath the Hudson River, connecting New York City with Hoboken, Jersey City, and Newark through two tunnels, the Hudson Tubes, that date back to 1908.
In this video, we take a short trip on a PATH train from Exchange Place to World Trade Center, traveling through the Downtown Hudson Tube and admiring the impressive architecture of the Oculus.

Trains Are Awesome!

I was told by a friend who visits NYC a lot that its cheaper to stay at a hotel in Jersey near the PATH station and then just book it across the Hudson.

I absolutely love our Path train system. I take the train from Journal Square to either 33rd Street or World Trade Center. Great video!

It's interesting about 19th street. It was eventually closed cause of the subway system being improved along with both the lengthening of the number of cars on individual PATH trains and the closeness of 23rd st station. When I was in college in the 80's i'd take the PATH back from classes I had in Manhattan. The train would slow a bit as it passed the 19th st station that was closed. They use it now for stockpiling material for the system. As they would slow down you could see some of the old posters of shows that were playing when it closed. I remember seeing an advertisement for The King and I with Yul Brynner. It's one of those quiet facts about the city that make it fun.

Also it's a very convenient way to go from Manhattan World trade Center and connect the New Jersey Transit on the way to the Air train to the Newark Liberty Airport at New Jersey, but careful, because last time I make a mistake, of non-stopping in the connection of the New Jersey Transit and keep going to Newark Union station, which is not even close to the airport. My mistake. But also to visit the Water ghost statue in New Jersey City close to Newport is a most, really convenient the Path to make that visit, and have a great view of the Manhattan skyline. Love your videos. Happy new year Tom and Linsey

Hi Thom as always another very interesting & informative upload. What a contrast between Sin City & The Big Apple - both cities operate 24 hours but are so different. NY is also my favorite US city - so much to see & do. My sister lived in West 43rd Street Manhatten so it was handy for viewing the numerous sights & seeing the latest Broadway shows etc. when I was able to visit her. I have never tried the PATH or been to New Jersey so my 'To Do List' keeps expanding every time I watch your uploads. I also have on top of my list wanting to experience the new Moynihan Train Hall -(especially the new lounge) such an improvement on the Penn Station Train Hall. The World Train Centre station is also a must-do for me. As always thank you for sharing your train experiences.

I live near Newport Station and man, I love the transit system. At Newport you got Direct trains to 33rd street, wtc and many other things. The only thing I don't like which i don't really mind but on the weekend the green line is closed, so if you want to go to go to wtc, you gotta stop at grove street, But i dont really mind that

Did you know that, until the 1970s, the Norristown line in Philadelphia was in a similar position to PATH? Insofar as being a subway-like 3rd rail operation that was under federal jurisdiction. I think to save money and have fewer regulations, SEPTA deliberately cut connections (in fact in the past there were even some freight customers) so that it would no longer be an FRA regulated railroad.

Also apparently the Staten Island Railway is also under some federal regulations, but not as strict as with PATH, because it's technically passenger equipment on a freight line (otherwise the trains are identical to a type used by the New York City Subway)
