A lowkey dreamcast I've had since college- a reading group or seminar that reads ibn Khaldun and Hanna Batatu side by side (specifically, Batatu's "The Old Social Classes and New Revolutionary Movements of Iraq.") Khaldun wrote about the emergent social and economic structures of medieval North Africa; Batatu wrote a heterodox Marxist sociology of Iraq in the pre-Baathist Republican period. It feels like both could offer insights on the contradictions, limits and insights of social analysis within the worlds they occupied. Idk how much theoretical or practical insight would come from it, but they both offer serially underappreciated, historically situated apertures of modernization/state formation in the eastern mediterannean (and western "Islamic" world.)

Great discussion and analysis!

Great to hear topics like this. Derrick, can you recommend any books on early Jewish history or the Pharisee period?

First mention of Ibn Khuldun was a reference in Michael Woods companion book to In Search of the Trojan War discussing decline of societies alongside Turchin. And Reagan made references to Khuldun. So I was aware of him in the late 1980s and into College but never actually found his work until recently

All of mainland Europe is on the Eurasian Plate. Europe is part of Asia/Eurasia Full Stop.

But interestingly there are several parts of Asia that have their own continental plate, not just India and Arabia.
