Contrary to popular belief, Debby Boone was not the original singer of "You Light Up My Life," nor was the song ever meant to be about 'God.' It was in fact written exclusively for the 1977 movie of the same name. It was originally performed by vocalist Kvitka "Kasey" Cisyk, and lip-synched by actress Didi Conn who was the star of the film. Ironically, despite its comforting melody, the real life story of the man who wrote the music (songwriter Joseph Brooks) is very disturbing.

This is more emotional, but, never soggy, yet warmer, stronger and more intimately appealing to my soul than any other “commercially successful” versions, though they all did what they could do best at the time.

I remember as a kid watching the movie. Loved the song ever since. Though i was a kid in the 70s I remember good things about it

During the summers of 1985-87, I performed the song, a capella, during Talent Night at the German Summer School at Taos Ski Valley, NM. I serenaded a lady during the song and the entire audience of 150 sang along with me and enjoyed the show. You Light Up My Life has become my love anthem and I hope to serenade my future wife with that song. Brings me to tears whenever I hear the song.😢

I've always heard it by Debby Boone, since one day in 1977. Never by her, as she was the one who originally recorded it. The interpretation that she does in this song leaves me speechless. I never thought I could see someone sing it better than Debby Boone. I don't want to take a single carat from Debby, but from now on (May 14, 2023) I will keep her in mind... to see in her the best way to give my soul and even my life.
