Using it naked can get you arrested!!..But I see your point!! Cases must not hinder usage.

The real reason I would not use a case is because… they get too hot. Sure, this is a tablet but a laptop at the same time with a full desk OS. You need enough space to allow air to flow.

Edit: No one has yet designed a case god enough for the Intel model… a lot of companies who have a brain will never design one. And it’s even recommended by UAG not to use a case on Intel models, except Microsoft’s new arm processors.

for folks who are concerned about ergonomics: my big issue with my new surface pro 7 is that due to the weight of it and the slipperiness of the back, using it as a tablet is a strain on my hands and arms. it's hard to even lean on a pillow bc it slips off. i agree cases make it way less sleek, but i need a case with a rubberized back and a handle otherwise trying to use it as a tablet will kill my hands and arms. this has been somewhat of a disappointment as my whole goal in getting a 2 in 1 was to use it in tablet mode to annotate pdf's, but this will be an ergonomic disaster without a case. i haven't found an ideal case, but the best seem to be either the Moko Rugged or the Kensington Blackbelt 2nd Degree Rugged.

I've had a case on mine since I've bought it (a couple of years ago for school), but now I'm considering using it naked too (well, mostly naked, I've got one of those sticker scratch prevention skins). It's just so thin and light, it seems like such a shame not to make full use of how slim it actually is. I'm one of those people that likes to leave things as perfect as possible, but the drawback to that is that I'm not able to fully enjoy the product as intended, like you said.

theres always the option of putting a dbrand skin on it to give it the very minimal level of scratch protection! there are different textures as well so they are able to change the feel of the device without adding bulk etc.

I very much appreciate the design of the Surface, I have the Go. But I slapped a glass screen protector, a UAG case and a type cover on immediately. I'm not even a clumsy person, but like you mentioned resale value is definitely of importance to me. And yes these do scratch easily. Cheers!

The case isn't to protect against scratches but against drops. Tablets are used differently than laptops, even 2in1 convertibles. They are lighter weight and thinner (even than the ultras) and easier to use in tablet mode, and this means there are more scenarios beyond moving to and from a table, using it one-handed, in a easy chair, in a bed, all of which increases risk of a drop. A case is basically insurance against increased risk that is higher than a laptop.

These were all of the problems that I had too... I actually ordered a case off the bat and immediately hated it as soon as I put it on. I felt like I could be careful enough with my Surface that I wouldn't need a case. I bought a cute sleeve for it that I put it in when I'm not using it to prevent scratches, and I haven't had any problems so far in the month that I've had the computer. I set it down on the type cover when it's not in the sleeve as well. I will say that when I use the surface on my lap, I try to get in a very secure position or I put my sleeve under the computer to add some friction so it doesn't fall. For those that want to use their Surface naked but are super clumsy like me, this is what I recommend. Thanks for your review, Kevin!

I use mine without a case for the same reasons. Yet ironically I find myself almost afraid to use it as much due to the lack of protection, thus changing the way it was intended to be used.

Late to the party but I never use a case on any beautiful tech product I buy. Why? Would you put a rubber case around your Porsche when driving around in the event someone scratches it? No. You buy a sexy device you show off that sexy device. Threat of drops is part of the premium. Otherwise you don't belong in the club.

I got a metal dbrand skin (black brushed titanium) to put on my SP6 (front, back) for this reason. I from time to time use a slim case that feels just like the signature keyboard too. Definitely many options at least

What about putting a screen guard on it? For protecting the screen and paper feel while writing?

My sp7 will be here in 2 days and I'm frantically looking for a case that won't cause overheating (i7, music production.) I'd love to go no case but this surface pro will live with a 5 year old, 2 year old and 3 month old!

Case ends up adding more weight and bulk to the device. Get a skin to save it from scratches. Not sure why you would need a case for tablet. If it’s a phone it makes sense as you rough use them and keep them on your pockets but tablet is suppose to be use with care anyway. Save your self money and get a skin instead. Invest in type keyboard or a mouse or pen that will increase the worth of your tablet and be useful

My SP7 wouldn't last that long if I didn't have a case lol

I've had my Surface Pro 6 on a desk for over a year cuz the big ticket price is too risky to carry around.

When I invest into devices like these I prefer to invest in something that's going to last me the next 10 years or so at least. and if it's going to last me that long I think it's going to need as much protection as I can get for it. I basically intend to use em till they disintegrate or something.

Personally I don't really understand the gripe about the weight of these tablet devices, they're basically the weight of a sketchbook or something, that's like nothing. At the end of the day you do you right?

put it in a sleve in my backpack that's patted, dropped my backpack and boom, the thing has this giant thing in the top left and the screens popping out. Gladly it's not cracked but it's extremely sad
