He’s not really being literal it’s a statement he’s making on what that statue was made to represent as a safe haven of the immigrants which mind you is what the majority of the American population started out as. My family came here in the early 1900s from Ireland, the only people who aren’t of immigrants are native Americans. For a long time America was seen as a safe haven for those seeking to flee their countries. The base of the Statue of Liberty says “give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore.” The Statue of Liberty is a political statement of a time when America was the safe haven for the immigrants. Unfortunately post ww2 America quickly grew a xenophobic and absurd mindset on immigrants that has only worsened today. The politician is making a statement that the America of today does not follow its values in favor of a illogical hate. Every American without ties to native Americans is a of a originally immigrant family.
