Historical Whorls and Spindle Sticks

I believe you might have over-analyzed spindle shafts. That bulge would be terribly inconvenient. The trouble is that often the spindle drops to the ground and you will knock the spindle loose. Straight sticks that rise up from horizontal fruit tree branches make the best spindles. I would guess they are easy to come by but mine are 40 years old now.
The taper means that when the spindle hits the ground the whorl is driven on more tightly.
The biggest enemy of the hand spindle is precession, the wobble. I had my college physics professor analyze it and explain it. He was fascinated. The less wobble, the longer the thread you can spin on one twist of your thumb.

Oh my goodness I hane been searching for this exact information!!' Thank you so much!! I saw old Scandinavian spindles and whorls and immediately wanted one! I am currently widdling my own shaft with a belly but I wasn't sure how it was going to work with a whorl on it. This was absolutely great.

Yes !!!
I was thinking yesterday of a magnet I could add screws too...
Or a bolt at the bottom of my dole, so I could add or remove nuts.
(Someone had shown how one could make the whorl from an apple or potato. )
The whole issue, for me, with all the videos I have been binge watching the last few days, is "how to adjust the weight?".
Not only for different yarns but also as the yarn fills the dole, it will affect the weight overall.
This is an answer.

Was going to make a spindle and looking thru trimmings son did of a shrub, wondered how whorl shape, wt, size would effect speed of spinning lt to md wt yarn. Thank you for your wonderful video!. (he chopped it all too small for spindle shaft)

I am looking for a demonstration of the Salish throwing spindle. The technique and spindle is unique worldwide and I can only find description of the process and a historical photo or two. If you are up to the challenge, it would add much to your comprehensive collection!

Hi. Thank you for your video. I can't quite see in your video if the belly on the stick is nearer the hook end or the tail end ... maybe you could also say whether this would vary for top & bottom whorls. I found a lead whorl, and would like to try it out. Also, I guess you occasionally spin your pigtails into the yarn?

is there any possibility to take a broken piece of pottery and make it round and put a hole in the middle and use it as a spidle whorl?

It kind off looks like a hair pin after you take the stone off... I can just imagine someone sticking one in there hair like I use to do with knitting needles

That's because wood rots very fast, and stone, clay, or metals do not. .___.
