Does anyone else notice that kurapika has adopted Paku’s habit of asking “do you trust me” right before shooting someone with his nen ability

This man actually analyzed the succession war. Such a dense arc is deserving of a reread, I should get to that.

I think most nen beasts represent means of control as a ruler.
-Tserreidnich : control with fear
-Salésalé : pure lust (an unstable way to reign)
-Tyson : control with love and admiration. Basically cult of personnality and how cults work as a whole
-halkenburg : gives his allies power in exchange of loyalty. Ruling with collaboration
-chorai : control with wealth. His nen beast produces coins with unknown usage. He doesn't know wha they couls be used for but he's sure he can control his subjects with it. Basically it's how money is just valueless coins, but it still makes the world revolve

As someone who struggled to fully understand the themes of SW this was very helpful. It puts a simple focus into an otherwise chaotic arc.

The SW arc people make the Phantom Troupe look like saints

Togashi showing the nuance of nihilism is so superb. The consequences of society’s injustice ideologies are being excellently explored.

Kurapika already knows about the eyes. He just can’t act on it yet because of his duty to the 14 prince

The design of the top boat inside the black whale is suspicious as well, the design allows the top boat to escape once the chaos on the lower levels is out of control.

The succession war is a literal side trip but could be one of the best manga arcs(if completed) .. Togashi really nails putting concepts like this into his character storyline..

The great thing about this is that the election arc and the chimera ant arc tie in so beautifully to the themes you explained here. From the human families reunited after being turned into ants, from the chaos and heart of the election arc, I love how Togashi never underestimates the underdogs and the power they can have to disrupt things or showing how regular people are affected.

And suddenly the Succession war arc is my favorite Arc in Hunter X Hunter.

This was an absolute banger of a video. I have always wanted someone to dissect this crazy arc since it seemed ripe with layers of thematic messaging and morals

9:26 he’s aware of the eye collection as that’s the reason he agreed to board the ship.

What he’s unaware of is the head in the jar that potentially belongs to Pairo.

Loved the video btw

Just want to correct you that Kurapika DOES know about the eyes. That's how they convinced him to get on the ship

Great video. The Succession War is one of the most complicated arcs I've read in manga but you did an excellent job breaking down the themes in a way that feels easy to digest. Hope to see more videos like this on the channel in the future.

Another theme i have noticed as well is succession and maintaining a will past death. In this arc we are seeing a lot of post mortem nen abilities. This arc is also a succession to the ending of HxH and currently the author is wondering if even he will survive to see the end of this stage of hunter x hunter.

I think the most disappointing thing about this whole arc is that this is humanity's best attempt to venture to the Dark Continent in a long time. The idea that this absolute miserable joke of a ship was intended to somehow survive a place as unforgiving as the Dark Continent is hilarious at best. It makes it seem like the idea of actually doing something as unthinkably difficult as seeking, let alone finding, Don Freecs seem like something that Togashi would in no way be capable of creating within his lifetime.

oh my god i LOVE this video!!! you spelled out so clearly the themes that have been floating around in my head since i started reading, and brought up so many parallels i hadn't even considered. morena being a sort of foil to kurapika is something i totally did not see coming but it makes so much sense; kurapika is teaching people nen (about 20+ people i think, similar in size to morena's group) in order to force a stalemate and maintain balance. morena is giving power to her group in order to destroy balance and tear it all down. two seemingly similar means with entirely different intentions. the difference is, while morena is enabling the lower classes, the maligned and downtrodden, kurapika is enabling the people in power (the princes), giving them even more power. though unintentional, he did indirectly cause tserriednich's awakening, which poses so much danger that ironically enough, he may have created an even more dangerous situation than morena, despite his intentions to do the opposite!! god it's so good. the black whale as a microcosm of society and all its problems being pushed to a breaking point, the themes of greed and revenge both playing a part. drawing attention to post mortem nen being a metaphor for the consequences of revenge and destructive actions is so brilliant! i never even considered that. rambling aside, this was such a great video, got me really hyped for the series' return!!!

Yeah man!!! You're absolutely killing it with this channel.

Just an addendum to your point on the PT, they were compared many times to the Hei-ly family sure, but according to phinks, he said that they've changed from their old "watching the world burn" mentality, and we still aren't aware of what happened there. We're missing a piece in their backstory
