The song Katarsis brings out the kind of feeling that reflects the pain we have deeply hidden inside. The melody truly hypnotized me. As someone who grew up in the post-Soviet era, I saw in that performance the history, the pain of our country, the journey out of the regime and repression (the TV imagery resonated deeply, the old wooden house, the stones, the collapse). The colors were so gray, just like in Soviet times. It felt post-apocalyptic. In short, the song touched me deeply. As the lyrics say: “Your eyes see pain, my eyes feel it” and that truly resonates with me. In general, we Lithuanians are quite melancholic, so the song is a perfect reflection of us. The lead vocalist even reminds me a bit of Kurt Cobain.

We’ve lost in Eurovision so many times by trying to be funny, funky, obsessed with our past, or overly inclusive. While we might be all of those things to some extent, we’ve rarely embraced who we truly are—melancholic, dark, and introspective. This is the real essence of Lithuania. Instead of chasing trends, we should fully embrace our gloomy, haunting beauty rather than trying to be quirky or overly commercial.
