"Only Sixteen" is a song by American singer-songwriter Sam Cooke, released in May 1959. The song was a top 15 hit on Billboard's Hot R&B Sides chart and also charted within the top 30 of the Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart. In the UK it was covered, and taken to No. 1, by Craig Douglas.
Dr. Hook released a version of "Only Sixteen" in the winter of 1975. Their version was the most successful chart release of the song. It reached number six on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number five on the Cash Box Top 100. Dr. Hook's version spent 22 weeks on the charts and became a Gold record. The song was banned by the BBC[citation needed].

Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show (shortened to Dr. Hook in 1975) was an American rock band, formed in Union City, New Jersey. They enjoyed considerable commercial success in the 1970s with hit singles including "Sylvia's Mother", "The Cover of 'Rolling Stone'" (both 1972), "Only Sixteen" (1975), "A Little Bit More" (1976), "Sharing the Night Together" (1978), "When You're in Love with a Beautiful Woman" (1979), "Better Love Next Time" (1979), and "Sexy Eyes" (1980). In addition to their own material, Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show performed songs written by the poet Shel Silverstein.

Lyrics:
She was only sixteen, only sixteen
But I loved her so
But she was too young to fall in love
And I was too young to know
We'd laugh and we'd sing, and do funny things
And it made our hearts glow
But she was too young to fall in love
And I was too young to know
So why did I give my heart so fast, it never will happen again
But I was a mere child of sixteen, I've aged a year since then
She was only sixteen, only sixteen
Oooh with eyes that would glow
But she was too young to fall in love
And I was too young to know
So why did I give my heart so fast, it never will happen again
But I was a mere child of sixteen, I've aged a year since then
Now she was only sixteen, only sixteen
Oooh but I loved that girl so
But she was too young to fall in love
And I was too young to know
Yes she was too young to fall in love
And I, I was too young, I was much too young to know
Låtskrivere: Sam Cooke

My grandma showed me this band a few years ago, and she's just died yesterday.
She is one of the main reasons im even still here, she got me through some of the toughest things in my life.
Fly high grandma x

I just love their tongue-in-cheek approach exemplified in this, Silvia's Mother, and When You're In Love With A Beautiful Woman. I detected it when I was a youngster first watching them on TV and I still see it. Thumbs up if you agree.

We grow older, we change, but sometimes we hear a song that takes us back in time with fond memories! And these guys did just that..

You could never leave their show depressed. They were great musicians, and exuded joy.

What I like the most is...no pyrotechnics or light shows...no cell phones in audience...just two gentlemen, a simple band, sharing and enjoying their wonderful gift!! I mean that as the upmost compliment.

Today's kids do not have the quality music we had as teenagers. This incredible band made playing music fun. They had a blast, we had a blast. Dr. Hook was and will always be one of the greatest bands of the 70's. R.I.P. Ray.

One of the stand out bands of the 70's.   They had great songs, were great singer/musicians and fantastic entertainers.  They don't make them like this anymore.  God bless them.

I remember my mom and dad taking me to one of their concerts, in Lee County Florida. They played at the county fair! I remember knowing all the words to the songs, and I was surely under 10 years old. So fun. My mom and dad gave me the gift of music, for which I'll always be grateful! Yes, they were good, right?
