A lot of people are missing the "point" of this form. The rubber fruit is basically the "rubberhose" fruit.

Rubberhose is the old style of animation. Its present in old cartoons like looney tunes and in the game Cuphead, and its iconic for everything behaving like rubber. This fruit basically turns Luffy into a rubberhose character (a literal cartoon character) in a "normal" world. This isnt the first place where this concept is used, in The Mask (the movie with the Jim Carery) basically did the same thing, it made him a cartoon character that could do whatever.

This also explains why part of his clothes become white. Old cartoons were in black and white.

Lets remember that Oda is an artist, and his art is heavily influenced by this old cartoon aesthetic, with the long tube arms and the eyes popping out of their heads when they're suprised, there is clearly a lot of inspiration drawn from rubberhose animation. The foreshadowing for this fruit has always been in plain sight, its in the name! The lore of the sun god Nika was to tie in this ability to a mythical character within the story, but the REAL reference is to old cartoons.

You know, I absolutely love everything about gear 5th, but one of the best things I love about is the very presence it has. Long before this, when gear 4th was considered the pinnacle of his strength, it just seemed so lacking in both power and presence compared to other shonen transformations like SSB, Kyubi Chakra mode, and even Mugetsu, but Gear 5th now has that presence and power that easily puts it up there with the others.

The panel makes it look like Luffy put a hole in Kaido head. Now with translation I assume the punch through Kaido face is probably meant to cave Kaido face in and extend backward like you would see happen to Luffy sometimes when he takes a strong punch, or like a cartoon character who just got hit in the head by something at high speed. Just wasn't drawn properly in the panel

I think it needs to be specified that Luffy wasn't defeated, he was killed. Mythical Zoans only seems to activate upon the death of their wielder.

I cant believe everything I'm finding out about Luffy's gear 5/ awakened state as well as finding out that he's he's mythical zoan and not a paramecia. I love it, I love everything about it despite the fact that I can't stop thinking about it

I think the foreshadowing for him using a paramecia type awakening with his mythical zoan is when they originally TOLD him that awakening is influencing his surroundings with his devil fruit. SO using his IMAGINATION he made it possible to mimic paramecia awakenings

That killer punch is drawn very deceptively. It seems like luffys fist should be stretching kaidos face or helmet and could have been colored darker to show that, but instead its the second clue to nikas powers. The first clue was reaching through kaidos eyeballs, something anatomically impossible, just like surviving a hole in the head. Two clues about the limitless potential of luffys awakening. He not only has the power to kill an emperor with a punch, but he chooses not to and only kos him. Oda is showing us Kaido is not the rival for this new power, not even close. The second When Luffy transformed out of Gear 5, Kaido dropped to his knee… the amount of DAMAGE that Luffy is inflicting on kaido, kaido feels that pain when Luffy drops his awakening form. Because notice how kaido isn’t really feeling anything by turning into rubber.

I wonder if Luffy met anyone that had the actual rubber fruit, since that isn't what he had. You'd think the true gum-gum fruit has to exist, right? Literally every other possible fruit exists, so there should have been a mixup where Luffy and another guy both claimed the same fruit.

Every gear of luffy comes with a drawback
1) gear 2nd - he gains speed but later is unable to move
2)gear 3rd - he increases size of his body later his body deflates
3)gear 4th - ultimate blast of haki then he is unable to use haki for 10 minutes
4)gear 5th - his power comes from his heart so maybe as a drawback he gets a heart disease or his heartbeat weakened

It's not just rubber. It's rubber HOSE. Luffy has unlocked Popeye mode, and has turned himself, and everything around him into a 1930's cartoon. It's full on slapstick, and everyone he fights is going to get slapped.

I think Kaido is going to fall here, but like Big Mom he isn't gone for good. His and her devil fruits are gonna be stronger as well, seeing as how the best way to train your df is to get the hell kicked out of you
