It’s so refreshing having a high stakes battle that’s playful and carefree rather than serious and intense all the time. It suits the tone of the series very well too

The demographic for shounen anime being what it is, it is understandable that a sizeable chunk of the fans would be dissatisfied with the "goofy" power up Luffy got. I don't think anyone should be chastised as "fake fans" for their tastes either. It is the way it is.

But this power up is narratively perfect for a character like Luffy and an absurdist story about freedom and liberation like One Piece. I cannot put into words how much I respect Oda for doing what he wanted to do, instead of appeasing the fans. I believe that's what art should be. The canvas belongs to the artist, and the artist should have the freedom to say whatever they want using their art. Some people may not like it, we may loose some fans along the way even; but that's okay.

The way both Luffy and Kaido smiled at the start... For them, this fight wasn't just about the fate of Wano, or about the One Piece. This battle was two warriors at their peak, looking to test their strength. Kaido wants to see if he's finally met his match, and Luffy wants to see if he can really take down an Emperor of the Sea.

It's nice how Gear 5 doesn't give Luffy an instant win or makes the fight too one sided. Kaido still is landing powerful punches and Luffy is still feeling every one of them

One thing I love about Gear 5 animation so far is that it has enough of a hint of badass amongst the goofiness. That clap at the beginning is one such example. The rest after, though, is pretty much in line with the power, goofy animations galore, and it's been super well animated so far!
