Billie Holiday was absolutely beautiful

She was just dripping with style, inside and out. She had a certain glamor, yes, but there's also a subversive aspect to it. Her voice doesn't have many "beautiful" qualities. It's kinda thin and edgy, and she had a pretty limited range. But she's just so deliberate and natural with how she uses it, it sort of seduces you, daring you to keep listening and listen harder. That's why so many people don't "get it" when they first hear her voice, but fall in love with her over time as I did. She knew that style wasn't just about being middle-of-the-road or being different, It's about being deliberate. And she always knew damn well what she was doing.
