Russia will station tactical nuclear weapons in neighbouring Belarus, Tass news agency quoted President Vladimir Putin as saying on Saturday. This will be the first time since the mid-1990s that Moscow will have based such arms outside the country.

After breaking away from the crumbling Soviet Union in the early 1990s, Belarus became increasingly aligned with Russia. The ties between Russia and Belarus were strengthened after Moscow's invasion. Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko has allowed his country to be used as a staging ground, while avoiding his troops from taking part in the war.
