as a young apprentice in 1950 i used Coventry die heads for most threading applications. Never any problems provided you remembered to insert the dies by number.

Sweet!!!! I Don’t quite understand what causes the head to stretch out and stop

The cutter inserts are called “chasers” and are still available new or used on eBay and some good supply chains. In fact I was able to find brand new Diametric heads and chasers from MSC industrial supply on line!

All in all I was able to thread well over 600 threads 5 inches long with the same set of chasers with minimal wear on the cutters. The cutting fluid is very important. You want to use a heavy cutting oil with sulfur added for steels and stainless. Screw machine oil works well.

I haven’t read the comments in a long time. Sorry for the super late replies!

The head has a mechanical spring inside and once the carriage stops the head stretches the spring and at the end of its travel disengages the chasers with approximately .050 inch clearance.

These run anywhere from $150-$2000 depending on condition of the tool and how many different chasers / dies they come with

I have one that I haven't used. Does it pull the carriage or are you feeding with the chaser?

Diametric is the brand. eBay has them for sale all the time.

Oh. So the carriage stops and the chasers disengage and the carriage rapids out. Cool. So the material must go onside the shaft of the die head🤔
